Canada's next Governor General

I don't. I'm making assumptions based on their apparent character.

A self-entitled person who is used to being told that everything about them is fine and good and they can do no wrong and whose incompetencies are chalked up to various things other than their actual damn self.
Given millenials work in many offices for various public officials, and we don't see complaints like this every other week (from other ministers, etc.), I think we can chalk it up to unique awful management and not the snowflake character of the employees.

As I said, I chalk it up to her being too tough for certain people. Is she over-the-top hard-ass? Maybe.

I have more respect for people like her than I do for managers who will go out of their way to make even the most incompetent underling feel "welcome" and "loved" or whatever (respected?).

As I see it, just another strong woman being pushed out by a "feminist" government....and I ain't no feminist, let me tell ya what. I just have more respect for women than the virtue-signalling woke mob, that's all.

And my real real point was that any outrage over this drama should be directed at the PMO and I stand by that just as firmly.

Julie Payette isn't tough, she is the "Karen" at Starbucks who belittles the barista because her Grande Caramel Machiatto, extra hot, stirred, extra shot, no whip, isn't up to her standards.

Bullies are cowards. I will never understand how someone can get enjoyment from being a nasty person and hurting others. Like Trump, the only time he would laugh and smile, was when he was making fun of people.

You're assuming she gets enjoyment from reprimanding her incompetent underlings.
I know I get absolute zero enjoyment from doing the same to my underlings at work.

Like Trump, the only time he would laugh and smile, was when he was making fun of people.
Don't compare Payette to Trump. Trump is an utter failure and joke. He couldn't run a casino. And that's all I need to know about him.

She couldn't even manage a largely ceremonial role, which seems easier than running a casino.

Additionally, what justification exists whatsoever to be a "hard ass" to employees in said ceremonial, cushy, un-elected, public sector role with light duties? There's no excuse for such abhorrent behaviour. It's especially galling with her because she's been fired or forced to resign in disgrace from several other jobs prior, so she clearly lacks insight and contrition on top of it.

Let’s start with this. How do we know her staff were incompetent?

I assume David Johnston had much of the same staff. Aside from his gaff about FN being immigrants, Johnston always seemed well turned out, informed and on time. Much of Johnston’s success would have been due to his staff.

You guys are all missing the fact that this alleged behaviour is also largely assumed, and not known for a fact.

Maybe she's an arsehole.....and being one myself, maybe that's why I can appreciate her. Don't know.

Alls I know is that if it was me, and it has been me, I'd like to hash it out with my employees. Talk it out....you know, like adults. Which we do at work. All the time. With death threats and inventive curses but a guaranteed meeting of the minds and agreement within minutes.

Not like these moaning ninnies running off to the press.

Brother, all your posts on this subject are largely assumed.

You've assumed the age/generation of the GG's staff, their work ethic and performance. But this alleged behaviour, this is the assumption you won't take?

We should have a governor general that is not just appointed by the Prime Minister. Someone that can actually be a check on Parliament

That is actually not what GGs are supposed to do or be. We live in a democracy - think of England,. the Queen can refuse to sign legislation but never does so. Would you want her representative (or any 'president') to have this power to over-ride an elected parliament?

Here is the role of the GG: They are only a check on the legislative/executive branch insofar as it is their role to ensure requests of them are in keeping with the constitution and conventions. Ie, that the things the PM is asking of the GG is legitimate.

The governor general presides over the swearing-in of the prime minister, the Chief Justice of Canada and cabinet ministers. One of the governor general's most important responsibilities is to ensure that Canada always has a prime minister and government in place. In the case of the death of a prime minister, it is the governor general's responsibility to ensure the continuity of government.

The governor general has important parliamentary responsibilities. Canada's Parliament consists of three parts: the House of Commons, the Senate and the governor general. It is the governor general who summons Parliament, sets out the government's program by reading the Speech from the Throne, and gives Royal Assent which makes Acts of Parliament law.

The governor general signs official documents and meets regularly with the prime minister and government officials. She has the right to be consulted, to encourage and to warn.

The governor general is Commander in Chief of the Canadian Forces. She visits military personnel both at home and abroad, encouraging and honouring them.

The governor general receives royal visitors, heads of State and other prominent guests. She accepts the credentials of new ambassadors who represent their respective countries in Canada. In her State visits abroad, the Governor General leads delegations reflecting a broad range of Canadian interests, accomplishment and expertise.

The governor general is Chancellor of the Order of Canada and the Order of Military Merit. The governor general presents honours and awards on behalf of all Canadians to recognize people who have demonstrated excellence, courage or exceptional dedication to service that brings credit to the country. The Order of Canada recognizes lifetime achievement; the Meritorious Service Decorations recognize exceptional deeds or activities; the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award recognizes selfless voluntarism; and the Decorations for Bravery recognize acts of courage performed in dangerous situations.
