Battlestar Galactica

From that I would gather that you need coal (or any other cheap, plentiful energy source) and understanding of science.

The only problem with the graph is that it falsely shows population as stable for some 700 years. The effects of environmental change and periodic pandemic disease would show a greater variation in numbers.

That being said, cheap energy, efficient transportation, improved farming yields, scientific ideas and the demands of a growing population for all the latter did contribute to an explosive growth in population.

There are two things that I think changed in the last few thousand years that has made today's technological society to exist. One, farming - which allowed for a population not to have to constantly move. Two, writing - which until it existed - we had a hard time passing on massive amounts of learning over generations. The people today are probably not really that much smarter (in fact probably stupider) than people people 5,000+ years ago.

Speaking of BSG, has anybody else watched the Caprica Pilot yet?
