2014 Municipal Election: Toronto Mayoral Race

Pay me? Buddy have you looked at the polls and the approval ratings recently? There's a large segment of us who support the guy. And if you want to talk reality, you should really consider the very real possibility of him winning re-election. The challengers so far are less than inspiring.

You do realize when they (Forum) tally's the "approval" polls that they add the "strongly approve" and "somewhat approve" totals together and that there is a 20%/20% split when he gets to his 40 odd % approval. That means close to 60% disapprove of the mayors performance - that IS NOT A MAJORITY Buddy-boy.

You either failed math in high school or was a lab partner of one of the Ford brothers....

Someone supports Ford and he works for him? You people must really be scared of Ford,lol..look I love the guy, he's incorruptible and he's stuck to his mandate and I respect him for it. Seriously if someone polled the residents of the city on their approval of city council it would be dismal...and if you want to talk Florida lets talk abt YOUR mayor Norm Kelly's trip to Florida in the middle of the ice storm...

Yeah - Kelly flew to Florida for the evening to have dinner with his brother. I've flown to Vancouver for a lunch meeting and came back the same day. The only time I was out of touch with anyone was during the flights. I'm sure the Mayor didn't go on a bender during the Ice Storm during a night off (of course he did) and was clinically "out of reach" (and really who cares its friggen Xmas - everyone does) - what's your point???

Dougie instead of backing his brother spent the entire week in Florida (I will add Dougie has proven that even being in the city he has ZERO control over his brother).

I love the guy, he's incorruptible
How is someone who is photographed by police exchanging packages in a suspicious and secretive manner with a criminal and drug dealer incorruptible? Extra points for explaining why someone so incorruptible refuses to speak to police about his suspect behaviour.

In defense of Doug "Sorry I'm late to the ice storm" Ford, when he did return from his sunny and relaxing vacation in Florida he DID put on a hardhat and grabbed his chain saw and got back to his superhero ways :p

Agreed - but then he was out there advising people that the going rate to having a dangerous tree remnant removed was 20 bucks and a case of beer. My sister hired an insured tree surgeon who had to bring out scaffolding to remove a branch that had partially taken out a neighbors roof and had landlocked both of their cars. I wonder how many people took that advice and had a tree come down and destroy what the storm missed cuz the "yokel had a chain saw"....?

The problem with this approval metrics is that they generally represent the upper band of a candidate's support. People (even those who have zero intention of voting for the mayor) can answer yes to this question as long they believe the mayor has sufficiently kept the lights on at City Hall without any major disaster. It doesn't mean they intend to vote for him.

A more representative question would ask people what their voting intentions are. When they're asked that that we know that less than 40% of people say they would even consider thinking about voting for Ford. Furthermore, only 1/4 of people believe that mayor Ford should remain in office.

And of course, when you ask people if they will vote for Ford against a list of candidates (Chow, Tory etc...), the amount of people who say they'll vote for him quickly falls to anywhere from 20% up to 35%.

In other words, the opinion of the average Torontonian would be something along the lines of, "The City of Toronto hasn't totally gone to shit under his tenure, so I do approve of the job Mayor Ford has done. However the city deserves a better leader than this. I have no intention of considering voting for him and I'd appreciate it if he would step down as mayor."

Okay lightning round! David - 1.) Favourite Movie? 2.) Favourite Simpsons character? 3.) If you had to wait 45 minutes for a King Street car during rush hour, what 2 things would you bring for the wait - not including a cellphone? 4.) French toast or pancakes? 5.) Have you ever been to Steak Queen?

Really Robyn? Let's not play into American debate tendencies, please.

Anyway, Soknacki for the time being is my favorite candidate in this election. I wait eagerly to see what Chow and Tory have to offer though.

Also can we not respond to trolls? (Though the intelligence of the Ford supporter might be at such a low level that I might be mistaking them as trolls?)

Exactly.
He is also linked to extortion.
And murder.

Exactly. Well said. The "approval rating" includes a lot of the "Ford's agenda without the circus" constituency.

Incidentally, may I offer the wisecrack that come October, Rob Ford won't need election signs--his supporters will string sneakers up on telephone wires, instead

How do we define a socialist with regards to Olivia Chow? Please don't post a wiki or other link, but instead explain what a socialist is in this regard. Thanks.

IMO, Olivia Chow hasn't done anything of substance to indicate what political leanings she has. Beyond being Jack's spouse, would we even know her beyond some distant memory of some councilor from nine or ten years ago?

Fair point AB. I am going on her allegiance to the NDP party. Is that such a stretch?

Personally I would never support a NDP candidate.

I don't believe you. I don't believe anyone is bigoted enough or evil enough to support that wife-beating bigot, once they are aware of that stuff. I believe that those who still support him are ignorant. And I don't believe your ignorant.

So why troll us?
