Toronto 2008 Olympics: A city that might have been

^ While Chicago may have good automobile access, it is currently facing tremendous public transportation problems, especially when compared to two of its competing cities. Chicago isn't competing against Toronto for 2016. It's up against Tokyo and Madrid. Transit woes are Chicago's Achilles...

Toronto 2008 Olympics: A city that might have been

I would hardly call Chicago the "frontrunner" for 2016. Its name does appear first in the IOC press release. http://www.olympic.org/uk/news/media_centre/press_release_uk.asp?release=2593 At the end of the press release, the IOC states, "*Cities are listed in the order of drawing of lots."

Will Obama and Harper get along?

All you have to do is remember the years 1993-2000 to see that Americans associate Democrat President Bill Clinton with economic success. Americans positively associate Republicans with only one issue related to economics: cutting taxes. When it comes to other economic issues like: 1) social...

Canada removes U.S., Israel from torture watchlist

Maronite Christians and Muslims have been able to put some of their differences aside and form a government in Lebanon. It's politically fragile, but the religious groups have been able to work together.

George W Bush meets Pope amid claims he might convert to Catholicism

In December 2007, Tony Blair converted to Catholicism, after stepping down as Prime Minister of Great Britain. His wife was already Roman Catholic, and his children attended Catholic schools.

    U.S. Elections 2008

Lordmandeep: Obama can indeed lose his base. The "idealistic nut jobs" don't have to vote for McCain for this to happen. They can just stay at home and not vote in November. Obama's campaign is all about enthusiasm. If his rhetoric becomes more hawkish, he will indeed lose the enthusiasm of his...

MPPs vote to continue using Lord's Prayer; would you scrap it or keep it?

I like the idea of pluralism. Have the prayers of other religious groups included. Although it isn't rooted Western notions of individualism and individual rights, Ontario --and Canada in general-- is becoming less Western everyday and prides itself on multiculteralism. Why not acknowledge that...

MPPs vote to continue using Lord's Prayer; would you scrap it or keep it?

Actually, Christian conservatives pray to Allah every day. It's the same god. It's just called Allah in Arabic. Arab Christians call their god Allah.

JN_12's Euro adventure - St Pancras Station

It's a far cry from the St. Pancras Station I visited in 1996. Back then, it was a dark and dreary rail station next to one of the diciest neighbourhoods in London, King's Cross. I wonder if the area has gentrified in the past 12 years.

Baseball vs. Cricket- which sport is Toronto more familiar with?

It's best to ask the local newspapers. My hunch is if a newspaper missed a baseball score, there probably wouldn't be any response by readers. However, if a cricket result left out, the paper would probably get a half-dozen phone calls about it.

Clinton says U.S. could "totally obliterate" Iran

I think Iran having nuclear weapons would actually take Iran off the target for conventional attack. Nobody has started a conventional war against the USA, UK, France, China, Russia, India or Pakistan since these countries declared their nuclear-armed status. I can see why Iran would want this...

    The REAL Niagara Falls

Looking at these pics, downtown Niagara Falls could just as easily be Detroit, Buffalo or Gary, IN.

Iraq War Will Cost 2 trillion what could that money have done?

One statistic I heard on the news was that the cost of 1 day's worth of fighting in Iraq could provide 250,000 U.S. children with health care for an entire year.

    U.S. Elections 2008

Unfortunately, Hilary Clinton. The last thing you want is a woman who's husband cheated on her to have her finger on the button launching an atom bomb.

Gonzales' resigns as U.S. Attorney General

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Though I worry about who his replacement will be. The AG office was held previously by John Ashcroft, not exactly a friend of civil liberties. Bush may replace Gonzales with someone more draconian. Thus, Bush's AGs could go from bad to worse to worst before this...

Lawsuit forces bus drivers to call out all stops

In order to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act, Chicago's CTA bus drivers are supposed to call out the names of all bus stops, though this is not always done. Technology has helped with automated announcements.

Boston City Hall to be demolished?

A good way to look at it. 40 years from now, people may say, "What did our parents see in Frank Gehry anyway? All his buildings have this deformed, defective look."

    Madrid (Europride 2007) - Barcelona

Give it time, Interchange. Remember, European cities have had several hundred years head-start to figure things out and set things right.

India's richest man builds 60-storey home

London in the 17th Century had several "mansions" that were very narrow and went up several stories. Space was at a premium, so they built upwards. Later on, these mansions became apartment buildings for several families. I forsee the same life cycle for this Bombay tower. Bombay has been a...

    Waterview Tower (Chicago)

It's hard to believe that they are going to build such a tall building on what was once a tiny parking lot. I can't wait to sip tea at the Shangri-La hotel that will occupy this building.
