We had a nice train ride to Ottawa on the weekend. On the way there we had a nice new car and sat in the pod in the middle with the big table. It was quite comfy and luxurious. On the way back we had a rundown old car with tiny tables, but the rest of the cars were new. Sadly we were just shy of an hour late, so no travel credit.

The new (Siemens) coaches are not mixed with older coaches, and are currently operating only between Ottawa, Montréal and Québec. If you were on a train eith a mix of coaches, the "new" coaches were likely LRC coaches or Renaissance coaches.

I’d assume that “new” referred to the most recent refurbishment of the LRC or HEP interiors…

Someone sitting next to me actually asked a Via employee about that. I know nothing about coaches other than how comfy the seats are and how ratty they look.

Out of curiosity, is it possible to mix the Siemens coaches with the other ones (LPCs/HEPs)? @smallspy

Can't remember if we've discussed that here before.

No, they are semi-permanent trainsets with special couplers used within the trainset, just like the Renaissance cars. You will find standard American couplers only at either end of the trainset…

And possibly even more important than the couplers (or lack thereof), the new trainsets use a newer - and incompatible - communications interface than the old equipment.

That is a blessing in disguise. We all know how VIA like to butcher and mix up its trainsets. at least now they can only mix and match venture cars and nothing else.

This won’t matter in 2 or 3 years’ time, when all non-Venture cars have been retired from VIA’s Corridor fleet…
