Stussy is opening their Toronto store this Saturday. It's at Spadina and Richmond. I think this will be their first Canadian retail store. :D

Noticed tonight that the former electronics store south of Yonge & Gould has a sign in the door indicating it's now the property of Urban Behaviour...

Anglophiles rejoice!

The first Chapters was in Burlington. I don't know if that was the first in the immediate GTA; but wasn't it something of an outlet-store lately?

I work for HBC, expect to hear an announcement from HBC very soon on their future. They have sold off one of their chain of stores (Designer Depot) to Isaac Benitah which hasn't been officially announced yet and are looking to sell off another (Home Outfitters). Now bring on the transformation of The Bay and Zellers into Macy's and Target which I'm most certain Jerry Zucker wants.

HBC looks to sell Designer Depot, doesn't mean more selloffs, spokeswoman says

TORONTO - A plan by Hudson's Bay Co. to sell its Designer Depot division doesn't necessarily mean that a broader disposal of assets is in the works, according to a company representative.

"No, no. That's ridiculous," said HBC spokeswoman Hillary Marshall in a phone interview. "There's just nothing to it."

On Monday, a report cited industry sources who said HBC's South Carolina-based owner Jerry Zucker is trying to get better returns from the business.

The plan reportedly includes talks with Canadian retail magnate Isaac Benitah, whose fashion discount chains are similar to Designer Depot.

Marshall wouldn't directly confirm discussions with Benitah, though she did say that HBC is "looking at alternatives for Designer Depot" and its nine locations.

She added that Designer Depot is "so small, when it comes down to it. It's not part of the core operations."

Marshall said the clothing depots employ about 50 workers and "they've all been pretty much moved over into the broader operation" at HBC.

Designer Depot follows a model similar to the highly successful Winners chain, which sells discounted brand-name goods.

But HBC faced a tougher-than-expected holiday season, according to many analysts, which has forced Zucker to look at ways to tighten costs across the company.

HBC, Canada's oldest company, has already laid off about 100 staff members this year and could be looking at further job cuts.

The department store chain has more than 500 stores and nearly 70,000 employees in every province operating through the Bay, Zellers, Home Outfitters and Fields outlets.
