Bancroft? Wow. That's got to be the smallest town in Ontario, if not Canada to get a Wal-Mart. That will likely kill just about anything in its little business section.

It was. Outfoxed was also really worth seeing - of course it was made by liberals, but they had all the facts in there (interviews with former Fox journalists, media watchers), and makes a very good case.

Probably the logic behind Bancroft is that, for all its modest size, it's become the de facto commercial nucleus for Ontario's middle-of-nowhere answer to "Deliverance" country--anything that'll beat driving all the way to Peterborough, Belleville, Renfrew, wherever...

They do want it to be a hub. A few years ago, Canadian Tire came in, but the downtown etc is thriving.
This last year, Sobeys was allowed in, instead they got a Price Chopper(crap). It put the IGA out of business. Now the locals are angry as the produce , selection suck big time.
But again, Walmart, even with new and improved stucco will suck more. It will suck the jobs, the wages, the taxpayers dollars in subsidies, the other business right into it's Godzilla Greed too hell.

I'd presume for anything higher-end, one'd have to go to Haliburton. (Which just strikes me as more of a Sobey's than Price Chopper sort of place...)

Probably just head to Peterborough. Bancroft is really coming of age though. With Muskoka priced out of the stars, alot of wealthy are heading to my folks area. They retired on a lake.
Hell, we got Jim Carrey, Alex Van Halen, The singer from the Cranberries and one Monica Lewinski on the lake!!
