WalMart New Store - Wal-Mart's aesthetic evolution

Re: re: Wal-Mart

"Too bad Guelph missed out on this latest architectural ingenuity. They'll just have to be content with Wallyworld's usual masterpiece of cinder block and corrugated tin."

Actually I thought I spied brick going up on the Guelph store when I was in town.

Re: re: Wal-Mart

Indeed- it's one of the most controvesial retailers in US history. They've been criticized of all kinds of things, some illegal. There well known hyper agressive competitive tactics - 'predatory pricing', foreign product sourcing, repeated violations of labour laws-skimping on health insurance and other benefits. Moreover in terms of communities, particularly small towns, there is an overt lack of concern for the general welfare of the community and their environment.

Some Brick on the Guelph Wallyworld? yay :rolleyes
I'll be shopping at the Canadian Tire across the street.

Re: re: Wal-Mart

Ethical issues aside, corporations only exist for the purpose of making the maximum possible profit.

Re: re: Wal-Mart

Well- technically just 'business corporations'. Of course other significant types of corporations exist whose primary purpose is not financial gain.

But bottom line- Wallyworld sucks.

Re: re: Wal-Mart

It won't make me, my family or any of my informed friends shop there. Ever.

Re: re: Wal-Mart

They put the Texas Star back in their logo. grief.

Just when I was beginning to think they were Canadian.

Most of the Wal-Marts have the star, only the older ones do not. For example, the one at Square One (pretty old) has a hyphen, whereas the ones at South Common and Sherway Gardens have the star (both newer). I actually prefer it that way. I find it annoying when stupid companies put a silly Maple Leaf in their logo to make it feel more Canadian: yes that mean's you McDonald's, Wendy's, et al.
Keeping their original and "real" logo is only honest.

Re: re: Wal-Mart

I was speaking with the local city counselor for the area (my old neighbor) aside from the fact that the rest of the corrupt Vaughan city council voted yes to this, apparently this has been in the works for years, and that area, along with those crappy condos are all designated dense commercial/residential.

As for a street of big box stores, that is not entirely correct, yes there is a Winners and Home Sense and a Grocery Store, past that there are a lot of little mom-and-pop shops, (and a great Deli :) )

The Promenade is very much looking forward to the extra traffic in the area.

Re: re: Wal-Mart

I love how they think that they can reverse the crap they have put up with more careless developments that show they haven't learned a thing.

Re: re: Wal-Mart

Keeping their original and "real" logo is only honest.

I preferred the hyphen instead of the star but a maple leaf as the hyphen would have make me puke.

As for the new Supercenters, there is one "going" in Brampton, but it is just the expansion of the Airport Road/Highway 7 location. I actually find it surprising how few Wal-Marts there are in parts of the GTA - for example, Brampton has only two (one per 200,000), even most of Toronto (North York, Toronto, York at least) has relatively few. Though in more rural Ontario, they're all over.

This just in today:

Jury orders Wal-Mart to pay US$78M

"Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT), the world’s biggest retailer, must pay at least US$78.5 million for violating Pennsylvania labour laws by forcing employees to work through rest breaks and off the clock, a jury found today."

Re: re: Wal-Mart

Millions of American families shop at Wal-Mart, which until now had a pro-family reputation. But recent events indicate that the company has chosen sides in the culture war, and is promoting homosexuality, including groups that favor “gay marriage.â€

If this trend continues, employees who believe in God, marriage and traditional morality eventually will face discrimination.

My god that's so scary it's sad. I can't believe that anyone even BELIEVES that. Hard to believe Wal-Mart can actually do something right!

Re: re: Wal-Mart

I recomend watching Walmart the highprice of low cost if you have not. What a corrupt place.

I will never go near a Walmart.

Re: re: Wal-Mart

To me, "never go near" is a little too kneejerk for comfort. It's like snob Torontonians who vow to "never go near" the Eaton Centre.

Personally, I might visit Wal-Mart on a token occasion (and often more for comparison than purchasing purposes; or as a collateral part of visiting Dufferin Mall, etc). But it certainly isn't the weekly-or-more ritual it is through a lot of Middle America or Canada--indeed, it may be more apt to say that the kinds of communities where Wal-Mart "stands out" are the ones I'm less likely to choose to live in.

Heck, it's no more depressing than weekly shopping at Towers or K-Mart in the 70s. As an influence on anti-shopping decisions, banality trumps evil anyday...

Re: re: Wal-Mart

"all business is about profits"

Not like these crooks. These guys take it too a new level, epsecially with all their corporate love ads about emplyees, community and charity.

I was warned about Walmart long before they hit Canada. I have seen what they have done to other downtowns etc. I have read and seen media such as Lou Dobbs talk about their practices for years.

My Dad's community of Bancroft is fighting one going in right now.

There is actually a FREE screening of the film Oct 23rd. I really recomend it.
