You've got to wonder if it is less to murder and more a convenient way to exile him with an implicit warning. I can't imagine it would have been that easy to escape death if that's the real intent.

The Russians often seem to be linked to elaborate murder plots involving poison and radiation etc.

As if the state couldn't simply have him shot; or run off the road etc etc.

To the extent the linkages are correct, seems much more like message-sending to the person, but also the broader community.

Yes, their M.O. seems to have become predictable. I agree with the view that it seems to have dual purposes; terminate the target and send the message that no one is beyond their reach. If they simply shot people, it would get lost in the clutter - far too pedestrian.

Then again, perhaps the West is jealous. There were allegedly hundreds of state attempts against Castro.

Merkel pressured to end Nord Stream 2 support after Navalny poisoning

Sept 3, 2020

Angela Merkel is under growing domestic pressure to end her support for the joint German-Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline project over the confirmed poisoning of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

The German Green party called on the chancellor to use the nearly completed infrastructure project to press the Kremlin into answering allegations over what Merkel called the “silencing” of Navalny with a novichok nerve agent.

“This openly attempted murder through the Kremlin’s mafia-like structures should not just worry us but needs to have real consequences,” said Katrin Göring-Eckardt, the co-chair of the Greens in the Bundestag.

“Nord Stream 2 is no longer something we can jointly pursue with Russia,” said the politician for the ecological party, currently second in polls to Merkel’s CDU and a likely contender for the next coalition government.

But what options do they have? Can they reverse their position on winding down nuclear electricity production or is it too late?

French, Swedish labs confirm Navalny poisoned with Novichok

Sept 14, 2020

French and Swedish specialist labs confirmed that the poisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned with the Soviet-era nerve agent Novichok, the German government said on Monday.

Berlin previously confirmed that the opposition leader — who is currently recovering in the German capital — had been targeted with Novichok after a toxicology test in Germany.

"We renew our call for Russia to explain these events," German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said on Monday.

"We are in close consultation with our European partners on further steps."

Putin and his cabal are detestable. These European countries should do as little trade as possible with them.

Russia, of course, wants no doubt that this was intentional and who was behind it. The message must be loud and clear.

Russia's 'foreign agent' bill foreshadows civil society clampdown

Nov 22, 2020

Russia is looking to better protect itself from any suspected meddling from abroad. New proposed laws could target journalists, teachers and social media networks such as YouTube and Facebook.

The general thrust of several draft laws put forward in Russia's State Duma in the past few days is that the country is facing threats from abroad and the state must act quickly to ward them off.

Most of the proposals aim to cut Russia off even more from the rest of the world. And, like similar legislation in past years, they would mean additional restrictions on civil society and opposition politicians.

I just finished watching Navalny's documentary about Putin's palace and the corrupt money thievery that went into building it and its associated properties.

It's quite interesting in a whoah, wtf kind of way. Some impressive elements. Like an underground ice rink and a cool tunnel to a seaside tasting room.
It's only 17k+ sq m!

Russian with English subtitles. It's a bit long, but the first 3/4 are quite interesting. It gets all scheme of corruption layout near the end which is fine if you're directly impacted by theft through your taxes and all that, but might be boring for the rest of us.

Which part?

The overhead shots were from a drone they flew off an inflatable boat from offshore. Then there are old photographs from builders who worked on the project and public domain photos. The interior is also photos from builders and computer illustrations based on the drawings of the build which were provided by one of the builders.
