TTC: Other Items (catch all)

I believe Steve Munro had that brought up by one of his readers. The problem is that the materials in the tunnels (Asbestos, grease, various fluids) are combustible or otherwise hazardous. I don't want to be the TTC employee who explains why they started a 6+ alarm fire in a tunnel trying to clean it.

Granted that material can be liberated during cleaning can pose harm - but if it is that dangerous, it isn't like MOE would have demanded the space get closed. I mean do we really think that multiple trains passing through the tunnels drawing air at the same thing doesn't liberate that noxious stuff?

Try touching a high temperature laser to a pile of grease coated in various chemicals and fluids and see what happens. Goodness gracious, great balls of fire. ;)

I highly doubt the TTC will resort to laser cleaning (besides, it isn't like smoke at track level is a rare thing - and that's an uncontrolled, unpredictable occurence).

Islington Station is an embarrassment to this city. And not just because of the waterfall coming from the ceiling. Its walls are filthy. The TTC needs to power wash the place. It's consistently the dirtiest station in the city.
I think the TTC needs to look into more than just how dirty Islington is, asides from the mezzanine level outside of the bus area, this station is literally crumbling apart everywhere.

I’m curious why Islington would have this problem moreso than anywhere else on the line. Different constuction contractor?

First off, I am honestly surprised the TTC has not shut the station down for safety reasons. They could easily do Royal York turnbacks via the center track (Which is outdoors) at Islington. The power would not need to be cut unless there is a risk of the third rail shorting out.

As for the walls, the Ministry of the Environment has told the TTC they can no longer pressure wash the walls or tunnels due to the crud that is building up on them. It is a verifiable environmental risk.
Because all the suburban buses leave from Islington and Kipling. Extending buses to royal york would be extremely expensive and impractical.

Meanwhile in Montreal:

The STM gets into real estate above their subway stations. Should have been doing this before the condo boom for extra revenues

As for TTC getting into real estate, they do by selling air rights above most of their station as well wanting commercial for them. TTC has not been willing to have non commercial for Yonge/Sheppard and Islington terminal sites site they will generate less in the long run.

I do agree TTC needs to play a bigger roll for development over their stations, but their hands are tie by the city where their property must come part of Built Toronto.

Victoria Park was redeveloped for an residential tower where the current parking lot is. TTC Warren site is to be redevelop like Victoria Park and has to, to meet 2025 deadline for accessibility.

TTC signal upgrades, streetcar diversions this weekend

April 18, 2018

This weekend, April 21-22, the portion of Line 1 Yonge-University between St Clair West and Union stations will be closed as TTC crews continue installation of the Automatic Train Control (ATC) signal system.

Throughout the closure, express shuttle buses will run between Spadina and St Clair West stations only. The TTC encourages customers to use the following alternatives:

- Line 2 Bloor-Danforth to transfer to the Yonge portion of Line 1 at Bloor-Yonge Station
- 6 Bay bus
- 510 Spadina streetcar
- East-west streetcars on St. Clair Ave., College, Dundas, Queen and King Sts. to connect with the Yonge portion of Line 1

Wheel-Trans service will be available between St Clair West and Union stations for customers requiring an accessible connection. To request service, customers can speak with TTC staff at any location throughout the closure.

St Clair West, Spadina, St George, St Andrew and Union stations will be open for fare sales and connections to surface vehicles. All other stations on this part of Line 1 will be closed.

While the TTC does most subway maintenance at the conclusion of service each night, it continues to require weekend closures to complete ATC and state-of-good-repair work. One weekend of work during a closure is equivalent to about five weeks of nightly work.

Surface Diversions

Also this weekend, track and maintenance work on the Harbourfront Tunnel and on King Street will affect the following local routes

- 509 Harbourfront will be serviced by shuttle buses. Customers can board the buses from Union Station at the southwest corner of Bay and Front Sts.
- 510 Spadina/310 Spadina will divert as follows:
- 510A/310 southbound: east on King St., north on Church St., west on Richmond St. E. to route.
- 510A/310 northbound: south on Victoria St., east on Adelaide St. E., south on Church St., west on King St. E. to route.
- 510B southbound: south on Spadina Ave., east on Adelaide St.
- 510B northbound: south on Charlotte St., west on King St. W., north on Spadina Ave. to route.
- Shuttle buses will run from Charlotte Loop to Spadina Loop to cover any stops missed as a result of the diversion.
- 504 King and 514 Cherry will run as scheduled except for the area between Shaw St. and Sunnyside Loop, which will be serviced by shuttle buses.

The TTC is committed to keeping customers informed about work and events that impact service and about alternative routes. Customer service ambassadors will be available to answer questions throughout the weekend. For the most up-to-date information, subscribe to @TTCNotices on Twitter or sign up for eAlerts at ttc.ca.

The next scheduled subway closures are:
- April 28-29 - Line 2 - Woodbine to Kennedy for track work
- May 12-13 - Line 1 - Lawrence West to Finch West for ATC signal upgrades
- May 19-20 - Line 1 - Lawrence to St Clair for work on the Crosstown LRT
