Tweet @hmacmillanbrown @ttcsue and @bradttc (off twitter until 24th), one of them should help you; heather is their Presto customer service/outreach specialist from what I understand, she's very nice and quite helpful. Likely if you tweeted @ttchelps you just got an agent who doesn't know what they're talking about, which is sadly a large percentage of them.
These issues with the faregates are widespread, as evidenced in this thread you certainly aren't the first to have that problem, so it's ridiculous for them to say your card must have been broken or low on funds. Long-term, of course, ideally that should be an acceptable response from customer service as that should be the only reason the gate wouldn't open, but right now that is certainly not the case.
