Toronto Western Hospital addition: Krembil Discovery Centre (9s, Stantec/NXL)

Update:

• Spurred by the rapid growth of Western’s musculoskeletal health program;
• The projected cost of the 30,800-sq.m. facility is $165 million, with $60 million expected to come from private donations;
• To date about three-quarters of the donations have been raised, with an initial $30-million donation from philanthropist Bob Krembil;
• In September it was announced that the hospital’s application for a Canadian Fund for Innovation grant had been approved;
• CFI grants are awarded on condition that shovels must be in the ground within 18 months of the announcement;
• Construction is expected to begin in December 2009 and to be completed sometime in 2012 or 2013.
• Unlike MaRS there is no funding from speculative third party funding organization;
• Community consultation meeting to be scheduled soon;
• Design for the addition will be a joint venture between Stantec and NXL Architects.

Thanks Mike for the update. This project should help the Bathurst streetscape to appear more urban and pedestrian friendly in this location.

City Planning Final Report

For consideration by Toronto and East York Community Council on Sept 15/09:

This application proposes a nine-storey addition (60.9 metres to the top of the mechanical penthouse), “the Krembil Centreâ€, to the north-east corner of the existing hospital at 399 Bathurst Street. The addition will contain research and clinical floors as well as hospital care in the form of clinical treatment and rehabilitation facilities.

The original proposal has been significantly revised to address the immediate adjacency of the Neighbourhood to the north of the hospital site.

This report reviews and recommends approval of the application to amend the Zoning By-law.​

Seems to be moving ahead but the render closeup in the second image below seems to indicate a scaled back project judging by the original massing diagram in post 16.
The construction fence does not go around the gravel pit at the corner of Leonard and Nassau, just a mid block section.

Also the cladding looks different from the both post 16 and 21 and more than a bit ugly, IMHO. But it's only a render.
