I completely agree. I used to live at Yonge and College (for 9 years) and now live at James Cooper Mansion. I feel far safer in the Bloor and Sherbourne area, there seem to be more and more sketchy characters at Yonge/College and Yonge/Wellesley lately. I’ve been bothered many times over there, attempted robbed once, and no one has ever hassled me in the Bloor and Sherbourne area. I’ve lived here for 3.5 years and I feel this area is the best kept secret given its close proximity to the Sherbourne subway and 10 min walking distance to Yonge/Bloor and siginificantly cheaper real estate prices. There is a certain peaceful atmosphere on the side streets like Linden, Huntley, Earl, with the old houses and trees, which is kind of peaceful, quiet and quaint as well. I’m curious to see what becomes of Howard street in the next few years.

I wouldn't put too fanciful a gloss on this neighbourhood. It's adjacent to the largest low-income high-rise community in the country, and one of the most economically deprived in the city. Given that: "stuff" happens:

ok have at it. Enter "Howard St" into the Crime Map and you'll find out exactly how safe North St. James Town is. Not sure what "Forest Hill" has to do with anything.

TLDR? Here are the TPS stats, along with the city averages:

North St.James Town
Population: 13,513

Assault
Avg: 174 | Rate: 1,287.6

Auto Theft
Avg: 15 | Rate: 111.0

Break and Enter
Avg: 70 | Rate: 518.0

Homicide

Avg: 1 | Rate: 7.4

Robbery

Avg: 31 | Rate: 229.4

Theft Over

Avg: 9 | Rate: 66.6

I might be reading those stats wrong (and couldn't learn more confirm because the link posted did not bring me to where they had come from), but I don't understand how there can be "7.4" homicides. Either 7 people died or 8 did.

It's a rate per 100K typically ...

For example when Chicago had that really bad year (2016?) the rate was ~ 27.8 for the entire city. Seattle is 3-4 ... and Toronto is usually in the 2s.

So 7.4 ! 3/4x higher than the rest of the city .....

All back of the envelope math above ..

*shakes head* - the numbers are so small and granular, it's almost pointless to use as is without it being cognizant that the stat is super susceptible to year to year fluctuations - and if one wanted to go by trend, here it is from the same source:

North St.James Town (74)
Population: 13,513

Year | Number of Homicides

2014 | 2
-------------------------------------
2015 | 2
-------------------------------------
2016 | 0
-------------------------------------
2017 | 0

None in the past two reporting years. I think that offers a much fuller picture than it was being portrayed.

I just think it’s ridiculous to piece together a bunch of scary news reports dating back to 2013. Toronto is a huge city and there are murders everywhere especially when going back several years. And looking up the crime on one particular street seems skewed. Howard St, which currently has nothing except a few fairly run down apartment complexes but which is rapidly changing with new condos in the works. Are Torontonians really this soft? I think my worst experience at Bloor and Sherbourne was being asked for change....like twice. This area is rapidly changing and although not the coolest area it’s certainly very convenient and well situated next to the subway. The fact it’s 10 minutes from yonge and bloor and all those new projects including a hotel, mean good things in the near future.

Thanks for the link! I’ll now also make sure to steer clear of Bay Street, Kensington Market and the waterfront!

I’d avoid the Annex too, but that’s where I’ve dug my bomb shelter and munitions cache.

Yea, you can tell who actually has experienced the area 1st hand and who has experienced the area from the comfort of their couch. Was walking down Sherboune today. The area it's a changing...for the better.

With that said, here are some quick iphone snaps today. I need to start using my camera again.

I don’t think you understand how statistics work. Stats such as crime are considered as an average/mean.

Obviously I was being sarcastic. My joke was intended to highlight that it is meaningless when we don't know what the "rate" represents. Is it per year? Per multiple year? Comparing this area to the city?
