Absolutely. I distinctly remember this area in the late 90s/early aughts. Though I actually kind of liked its out of the way, quasi-dystopian feel, how far it's come is truly amazing.

Do you think IKEA is possible? I know they've historically opted for big cheap open spaces on the periphery but this could make for a good downtown test store. Was there any downtown parking built for whatever retail took the podium or was it always intended to rely on foot/TTC traffic?

Absolutely. I distinctly remember this area in the late 90s/early aughts. Though I actually kind of liked its out of the way, quasi-dystopian feel, how far it's come is truly amazing.

I recall walking down York to Harbourfront; there was a chain-link fence on the west side. I looked over and saw a groundhog watching me, and I remember thinking that the little guy had better find a new home soon.

I am married to one of the people responsible for this. It is a Fire Standpipe test. It is done to ensure there is sufficient water pressure to meet the standards require for the the fire suppression systems (sprinklers). Depending upon the height of the building the water is 'blown' from the roof or at various heights of the building(s). In this case due to the height of the building it was done in stages ;-) to a dramatic effect

When I first came on vacation to Toronto from the UK in 2001, I remember thinking it was strange how the downtown core was vibrant, and so was the harbourfront, yet there was this bizarre swath of nothingness right in between the two. This development, along with 10 York has really stitched everything together nicely.
