You do need to pay an extra full fare to travel between PATH and MTA subways in New York. And also when transferring between MTA subways and the AirTrain to JFK.

New Jersey has its own "subway" called the PATH (see link), that carries passengers from New Jersey into New York City. There is no transfers if one needs to use the NYC subway to their final destination in NYC.

Maybe York Region should have built its own "subway" into downtown Toronto. Ditto for the other 905 cities.

This shows a fundamental lack of understanding of what PATH and the Port Authority are. Neither the City of Newark, nor the State of New Jersey nor Essex County built "Their own" subway into Manhattan. We don't have a funding body or authority remotely comparable. And despite the fact it runs underground, it's more comparable to RER in pretty much every respect.

The City of Toronto can't build a subway itself so how on earth would a suburb do it? Few things drive me as crazy on these boards (whether it's here or the Yonge extension board or elsewhere) as someone suggesting, "If they want a subway, they should build it themselves," even jokingly.

The lesson to be derived from PATH is not that suburbs can build their own subways but rather that we need regional agencies to build and fund cross-border transit because while our agencies care only about their own borders, commuters traverse them all the time.

This could have been more useful if there were PATH service linking Newark Liberty with JFK and La Guardia.

Love the splashes of colour in one of the stations- I think colourful elements like those should be more prevalent throughout our system, as they can brighten up a station and make it feel less dreary.

And despite the fact it runs underground, it's more comparable to RER in pretty much every respect.

Most of the red line is actually above ground, which makes it even more like RER.

Today's open house was very cool. Highway 407 station looks especially grand with the sweeping curves.

Looks like a collector booth, but is actually just for selling tickets and information.




There are 2 elevator shafts. The one to the left of this shot goes from track level of fare payment level. This shaft goes from track level, through fare payment level, up to the surface. However it is restricted and only goes from fare payment to surface unless you have a key.

The concrete walkway is already stained from Corten steel runoff at Pioneer Village and the station hasn't even opened yet.

I hate to be cynical, but get used to it. Just look at how the original Spadina line stations have aged. The city doesn't like to spend money on nice things.

It's not even about money. The design team should have thought about this issue. A simple strip drain could capture the runoff, preventing large stains on the pavement.

The photos posted by a couple members pretty much sum of the great experience the open house was. The one thing I'll say is that I never realized how much of a white elephant the Highway 407 station will be until I went up there. I mean my goodness even building a station at the Rouge National Park would be more useful than this station. 100% of this station's ridership will depend on bus connections from Viva and GO.

My impression was that the bus left Pioneer Village, turned a corner, and arrived at Highway 407 station.
