The south "expansion" as they are labelling it (more of a repurposing/renovation isn't it?) is opening Aug 29th. Confirmed retailers include: Nordstrom, Zara, Saje (which has been jumping around in the mall lately, this will be its 3rd spot in less than 2 years), Loding, Squish, Nike (also opening an Outlet banner at nearby Dixie Outlet Mall), BonLook, L’Intervalle, The Danish Pastry House, and MAC. Again, some of these already exist in the mall. People seem to be happy about Zara finally opening up here (much like H&M did not long ago). They are definitely the kinds of stores that would have made someone skip over this mall in the past.

It's definitely an expansion: former parking spaces are now part of the Nordstrom.

What a bust, been going to this mall since the early 90's and this latest expansion is such a flop. They might as well take the tent cover down since it looks so out of place.

The middle and the high-end shopper.

It's a little early t0o declare the south rebuild a win or a bust: only half the stores have opened so far:

Nordstrom opens two weeks tomorrow, not sure how long before L'Intervalle, Nike, the Danish Pastry House, and MAC open. There are a few un-marked shops in the hall as well. Any addition like this takes time for everything to fill (and for other shops in the rest of the mall to finish shuffling about: a few always change location when larger premises open up).

Meanwhile, work has started where Holt Renfrew used to be on the rebuild there. This area will bring either 6 or 7 more stores, opening about a year from now.

It's worse than I feared.

Say what you will about the 80s aesthetic but it was certainly a statement. This is probably one of the blandest renos I've seen.

^^^Agreed. I hope when Christmas season comes around that they will have a grand masterplan for spectacular Christmas decorations and light/musical show. Has anyone been to Erin Mills Town Centre during Christmas season. It is awesome and nicely done. The money put into that mall's renovations was done right.

Cadillac has butchered the aesthetics of every mall they have renovated and Sherway's renos are probably worse than the Eaton Centre's in terms or stripping the original elements both malls previously had.

The amount natural light that entered Sherway previously was much greater compared the what enters the mall now.

I don't know I think it's a big improvement over the old version. The old food court was dingy and needed new floors anyway. The new section they added is all glass on the roof plus when they can they have added skylights much like how Oxford has done with its properties as well. The worst mall reno that they did was the shops at don mills

The pillars topped with potted plants drew your eyes towards the roof. Now, it's just a background element. The generic shopping mall storefronts are now front and centre.

Deep into the era of online shopping, malls probably need to do more than ever to attract shoppers with quality of space. Personally, I'd be far more tempted to make the trek out to Sherway if it felt like a nicer place to spend a couple of hours. As for the stores themselves, unless they're really, really special (like OVO, if you're into that), you can usually get the same stuff anywhere. For me, much of the attraction of Yorkdale is that it's a pleasant space. (And yes, that leads me to buying stuff).
