Toronto Police Service Reformation

The issue is to reform the police but a lot of people think we can live in a society without any police.

I truly hope no one is dumb enough to think that we can live without a police force. If so then they need to be forced to live in the bad parts of the city for a couple of years and then see if they feel the same way. Reform is fine and maybe some salary cuts for cops so that you can hire more people or something, but there's no way we could ever live without police. That's just nuts.

And you know the funny thing is people who call for abolishing the police are the same people who stay silent when there is rampant gun violence in the black community.

We've already been having rampant gun violence among black people for decades now and its getting worse by the year. Since Toronto started recording annual number of shootings its gone up and stayed up since 2014 where we had 177 shootings that year and it was the last time that Toronto had less than 200 shootings in a year. Ever since then it doubled in 2016 and then last year we had a historic record number 492 shootings and this year we're 34 SHOOTINGS AHEAD of last year's pace on this date.

So this has been an issue for a very long time and its only gotten worse in the past several years.

How can the police be "defunded" if this keeps happening?

Toronto police report another 365-kg photo radar speed camera stolen

From link.

Police are appealing to the public to help them find who stole a 365-kilogram radar speed camera earlier this month in downtown Toronto.

Police said in a news release Monday that the camera, also known as an Automated Speed Enforcement system, was stolen between June 10 and 12 from its location near Queen Street West and Jameson Avenue.

“The device . . . typically requires a hydraulic lift to remove it,” police said in their news release.

This isn’t the first time someone’s managed to haul away one of the bulky machines. Over December and January, four were stolen.

The cameras cost around $50,000 each.

The remaining cameras are scheduled to start automatically fining speeding drivers on July 6, after what Mayor John Tory called a speeding “epidemic”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-1400, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, on their Facebook Leave a Tip page, or by texting “TOR” and a message to CRIMES (274637).

Want to "defund" the police? Stop stealing their "replacements".

The series of votes actually had a few non-sequiturs.

But overall, many good things did get passed.

Notably a motion from Councillor Colle to look into adopting the Cahoots program from Eugene, Oregon which is alternative policing for mental health calls. That passed 23-1.

Read more on that program here: https://www.mentalhealthportland.org/when-mental-health-experts-not-police-are-the-first-responders/

A motion from Councillor Cressy asking for a line by line budget breakdown of this year's budget passed. (How absurd this even has to be requested).

Councillor Ainslie's motion asking the police to post their Use-of-Force policy on the internet for all to see passed.

Ainslie also got a motion requesting full police data sharing with the open data program through.

He also managed a motion to make the current mobile crisis intervention teams 24/7.

Councillor Fillion got a motion passed which requests the province amend the Police Services Act to allow suspensions without pay. Yet another from he was a request to amend the City of Toronto Act (requires the province) to give the City sole control over the police budget. To cap off a good day for this councillor he also got a motion passed to give the City's Auditor General oversight of the police budget. (again requires province).

Really, on balance, not a bad series of votes.

But we're a long way from meaningful reform and accountability.

Matlow's motion, even had it passed would not have been binding, and was only a request in respect of next year's budget cycle.

Let us work on actual police reform that does not put the greater public at large at risk to appease some activists on Twitter who just want to cut police budgets out of spite.

One thing that will keep our POC safe, particularly our young black men, by far those at greatest risk of death by civilian and police shooting, is Police, legislation and CBSA reform to get guns off our streets.

The greatest threat to POC is other POC getting them killed in Gang Warfare that allowed to become very violent due to many guns.

Yes, that's why I'm referring to, POC getting killed in gang warfare. Get those guns.

What's the point of taking guns off the streets when they'll be replaced in short order like they have been for decades now? Until our political leaders and black people have the courage to speak up and actually tackle the core problems in their communities, then nothing will change.

All we're doing right now is running around in circles without ever accomplishing anything because not hurting feelings and being afraid of offending people with the truth has time and again been shown to be far more important that actually lowering the amount of real violence and murder in Toronto. 211 shootings in the city to date? WHO CARES. Make even a mildly controversial tweet about crime and violence? RACIST! BIGOT! Destroy them NOW, but not before we squeeze an apology out of them that we can also criticize as being weak and half hearted.

If all the protests we've seen in the city against police brutality and supposed rampant racism were instead redirected to be protests against crime and violence and the demand for immediate action and change among black people to root out all the bad elements in their communities, we'd be accomplishing so much more. Instead no one with power has the balls and we're stuck in a neverending cycle of violence and crime that we can't do much about because the group most affected by all this doesn't ever want to change.

I see your back to peddle your claptrap again.

UT is better off without you, please go away again.

And this is EXACTLY WHY nothing will ever change in the city. Can't say anything without someone coming along to criticize you rather than being willing to have any kind of discussion on the issue. In 2014 Toronto had less than 200 shootings the entire year and in 2020 we have 211 shootings AT THE END OF JUNE. But WHO CARES?! Downtown becoming more violent and sketchy? WHO CARES. Forget trying to implement actual change that will benefit everyone. Just tow the damn narrative that the mob and the media are pushing these days and if you can't then just shutup.

So much for wanting real meaningful change that will have actual long term benefits and improve the city for everyone.

Like most people, I would like to see fewer shootings in Toronto.

I'm also very open minded to consider a number of causes and solutions.

But you don't come here looking for a thoughtful exchange of views.

You come here to spout off your views which either are or come right up against the line of being racist.

You victim blame, provide no evidence to support your views; and dismiss the views of those who are far more educated and thoughtful on this or other subjects.

You aren't here to learn. Few people would benefit from learning more than you.

Your posts are: rude, inflammatory, insulting, myopic and either are or leave the impression of being bigoted.

You are not welcome here. A diversity of views is great. Views expressed thoughtfully and supported by evidence and facts are indeed welcome. That does not describe your posting.
