Ontario Place/Exhibition Place Bridge Pre-Engineering & Costing Study
At the request of the City of Toronto, Waterfront Toronto has initiated a feasibility study of replacing the existing pedestrian bridge that connects Ontario Place and Exhibition Place with a much wider “land bridge”. Waterfront Toronto has completed a procurement process and retained DTAH and MMM to undertake the feasibility study, with all costs covered under an agreement with the City.

Deliverables from the study will include: a site conditions report, including phase one archaeology; design concept options for three different bridge widths; and preliminary cost estimates. The goal of the study is to determine whether or not the idea of a “land bridge” should continue to be included as the Province continues to consider options for the revitalization of Ontario Place. The study is expected to be completed by March 2017 for consideration in the upcoming Provincial budget.

Waterfront Toronto retained Dutoit Allsopp Hillier and Marshall Macklin Monaghan to undertake the feasibility study, that includes: a site conditions report, including phase one archaeology; design concept options for three different bridge widths; and preliminary cost estimates. The goal of the study was to provide information to support a decision about whether or not the idea of a “land bridge” should continue to be included as the Province continues to consider options for the revitalization of Ontario Place.

Ontario Place Park
The Park and Trail will be completed in June 2017, in time for Ontario’s 150th anniversary. Most of the soil importation and grading are complete and the pavilion structure is under construction and visible from Coronation Park. Portions of the park will be open to the public on the May long weekend (May 20-23) and closed again until the Grand Opening planned for July 1

What is a "land bridge" in this context? Are we talking no elevation and, instead, a signalized grade crossing?
 
No - it's an elevated bridge replacing the existing pedestrian one.

Oh, so the polar opposite of what my cynical Toronto mind was envisioning; cool.

Would be cool, conceptually, if they went a more rustic-ish route that somewhat mirrors the concept of the new park at Ontario Place, sort of a la the animal crossing land bridge things on the highway from Calgary up through the national parks:

I'm not surprised Waterfront Toronto is looking to replace that bridge. It's aged after a few decades of use, it has a bit of rust and wear, though it's a fairly nicely designed bridge nonetheless.
Here are two photos I took last autumn to jog anyone's mind on which bridge it is.

I have crossed here when entering for concerts etc, it is definitely too narrow. Would be fine if it were a regular pedestrian bridge but it is mostly used during large events when people are going one way or the other in very large numbers.
