Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

If the REM PR team translates Light Metro to Light Rail in English, then I'm sure someone did that same here.

The media also calls the REM's Alstom Metropolis trains Light rail.

Definitely seems like it is a poor explanation. Maybe it was described as: "The light rail vehicles being used in Ottawa", which on line 2 are the FLIRTS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadler_FLIRT. This is the kind of vehicle that makes sense.
The FLIRT's would make absolutely 0 sense on the Ontario Line, and would be an even worse outcome. It's not happening.

Even if they explained it as the LRT vehicles being used in Ottawa, that would also leave open the possibility for the Citadis which is not even close to being a good vehicle choice for this line either.

Why would they be a bad option?

An update from Anne. To confirm everyone's suspicions.

I mean if you look at the types of projects that have used the label - they vary vastly. It's not really surprising. The Spadina Streetcar was called LRT when it opened.. so was the SRT.
Oh, no argument from me. Just surprised to see a fully blown EMU train called "light rail".

Another funny quirk: Some of Toronto's H-series trains were sold to Lagos, Nigeria to build their light rail network. That plan has since been scraped.

FLIRT is a short heavy rail vehicle build to mainline railway standards. It could run on the same tracks as GO trains similar to those UPX trains. The whole “light” meaning here is totally different from LRT/LRV and light metro. Both in which the vehicles have a lighter frame and mean for urban transit.

light rail aka modernized streetcars are the worst for a fully grade separated line. They cost more and totally useless when there’s no at grade alignments.
