Yonge and Bloor (aka the Golden Corner or the Champagne Corner):

An office tower vibe? - Yes 80s/90s for sure, a mix of Toronto meets Hong Kong. Personally think a more office centric design on this corner works well in comparison with most of the recent tall residential projects in the city. Good to have a bit of variation here.

I wouldn't say ugly - but I'm definitely not blown away by the design...

Take away the supertall aspect, and take away the "Foster & Partners" name, and it's a pretty bland building that looks like another downtown office.

There almost feels like an expectation on this site, that we HAVE to like this building. Group-think if you ask me.
Well, it's almost sacrilege to speak unkind words about this project. It's not ugly, but it isn't all that pretty either imho. The hype piles high here.

Photos taken today, Friday (Feb. 7). Since I posted a week ago, work continues at the top on the 4th mechanical levels, 77-78. It was very cold and windy today, didn't see much activity on the tower. A little progress with the blue corner forms below, the SE corner up a level above the other corners since last week, around level 70. A lot of movement with the black Rail Climbing Systems (RCSs) installing the skin. Each side is up at least a level, the east RCS at level 54, with new skin visible now on that level on the south face. The north RCS is up a level to 53, and the west one now up to 52. And the smaller RCS on the south face is also up, to level 50 or so.

The second mechanical level corners now have a black surface up - not sure if it is shield for the weather or louvres.

Starting with the view from the south, Yonge at Dundonald, then closer from Charles etc. showing the new glass installed on the south face at level 54, and the east RCS now at that level. The view from by Holt Renfrew on Bloor west of Yonge, including a tighter shot of the north and west RCSs. The view from Cumberland, east of Bay, including another shot of the north and west RCCs from that angle, and a view of the 2nd mechanical level with the new-look corner. The view from the NE corner of Yonge, from a bit east of that, and another shot of the RCSs, this time the east and north RCSs. Finally, the view from Queen's Pk Cres W, by Hoskin, to the SW.

Unpopular opinion , but I wish Mizrahi had gone with RAMSA (their original plan) instead of Foster. Itd have been a much simpler, faster build.

To say it’s awful is as much a hyperbole as saying it’s going to win the Pritzker Prize. I hope you don’t live in Toronto, because if you think this is awful, I don’t know how you cope with the spandrel fest that literally is all over the city.
I concur, I don't think anyone really has claimed this is a masterpiece. It's a tower that a lot of love and thought in it's materials and presentation, that is clearly evident. It's also very tall and poised to break a record in being so. And it uses a fairly unconventional structure to hold itself up...so yeah, it's standoffish as well. But the Taj Mahal it is not. Nor does it really come close to our own newly minted Aqualuna at Bayside for that fact, IMO.

Outside of this, what we think of this tower is mostly subjective here. That is, some folks will never appreciate it for whatever reasons. And that's fine. However, the majority of readers likely favour this tower over something of the likes of 365 Church or that Social at Church + Dundas . And that's something fairly undeniable.

Taste is subjective, but if someone claims this tower is uglier than Social and 365 Church, I’d suggest they go for a cornea transplant …

This is the thing that should be important in this type of conversation: Because I dislike something doesn't mean it's awful. For example, I loath pickles and Air Supply, does not mean they are bad or terrible...it's just I am not into them.

....so peeps need to distinguish this when they state this tower to be "pretty ugly"...when they feel it's so in their eyes and opinions. Which again, is fine...and they have the right to that. Their position starts to become spurious and dodgy when their reasons don't add up to what is generally understood about it. So that becomes haters gonna hate thing...where there's no real value or substance in their protest and is likely uninformed at best, IMO.
