Bazis had sold out their proposal within days, but they had also arranged funding for the project through Lehman Brothers. When Lehman Brothers unexpectedly went belly-up, they took the project financing with them into oblivion, and the resulting worldwide credit collapse meant than no other bank was giving out building loans.

Basically, Bazis were about to start construction when they suffered incredibly bad luck with their construction financing and were forced to hand the project over to GG. Not that it stops people from making snide comments about foreign Kazakh businessmen without the smarts to put together a project of this size.

Bazis International was never going to complete One Bloor without some shady backer. It was simply too big, too complex for a company with no financial resources or reputation for anyone to approach it with a ten foot pole. I think the timing couldn't of been better for us Torontonians as the deriatives scam was destined to implode and we could of easily ended up with a half built stump or swimming pool. It's also totally unfair to businessmen across the world to call those behind Bazis-A in Kazakhstan businessman.

If you don't get what you want at first, maybe belittling or insulting the city will work.

Ahh come on, why should you not get what you want at first.. of all places, here in Toronto there is much evidence of many interesting great first planned architectural renderings/designs dissected by the gods above on a power trip.

It can take some time for a good idea to sink in. It's the time to pitch the vision from different angles and find some traction rather than resorting to such badinage. It's not even clear what he wants to do in that article (link). We're talking about developing a big chunk of neighbourhood here, and he goes on about an indoor gardens at the base of these towers.

there is a notice posted at the site, Yonge St. side, something about a request for encroachments (hoarding?), with a meeting scheduled for March 9....read it from the car & no time to snap a pic unfortunately.....

here's the pic......

Also, spoke with someone from Great Gulf today.....while they were unable to answer directly, their indirect answers would indicate that the height/unit increase is a go.......the new sales office on Bloor opens Saturday....

I wonder if he meant the increase that we already know from 65-70 storeys or is this the one we are all anticipating from 70-82 storeys, well we might just find out by Saturday.:)

If the Minor Variance is to create easements, it has nothing to do with the height. I suspect that the City has requested that an easement be left where Hayden St is now, because the proposal calls for part of the street to be removed, right? They may want to keep a public easement there for access to utilities, etc. Probably only 6 metres or something (usually the standard width for a utility easement), but still enough to require a minor variance under certain circumstances.

It may also have to do with the fact that the setbacks they proposed don't entirely meet zoning, so they have to get a minor variance to get the Site Plan approved.

Well, if they are adding about 200 additional units, a sales centre might be warrented.

Actually, if they are in fact almost sold out of the already released units, the fact that a sales centre is being created does suggest that more units are being added.
