What a hideous proposal. Tiny units in a massive eyesore. The city approved this mess?

The days seem numbered for the vacant lots framing the terminus of East Liberty Street, just West of Strachan Avenue. At the eastern gateway into Liberty Village, rezoning is already approved for CanAlfa Group's Block 4 at 19 Western Battery Road, and Block 10, addressed as 39 East Liberty, with minor variance and Site Plan Approvals (SPA) now under consideration. Designed by IBI Group, the two residential towers are planned at heights of 28 and 25 storeys, adding a total of 921 units to Liberty Village.

I find it weird how the city micro-manages every detail in the Distillery District, nixing brilliant designs by top architectural firms, and yet they don't give a toss about this much larger and more diverse heritage industrial district.

The situation gets even worse in the Stockyards, where the redevelopment projects typically aren't dense and urban. It's a decades-long saga of demolishing interesting and useful old industrial buildings and replacing them with generic big box stores and acres of parking along the 512 streetcar line. Only recently has some progress been made in renovating old industrial buildings for new uses like craft breweries, an organic food store, and a climbing gym. But by now, most of the land has already been redeveloped for big box retail and parking lots.

Nothing is happening here yet except it being a staging area for the development (ZEN) across the street, maybe they are preparing one big dig here to include 49 East Liberty (the proposed twin tower to 51 East Liberty)
