A video of Andy Byford and Brad Ross speaking about the various track works and reroutings along Queen this summer.
Some shots of the progress of Leslie Barns in the first minute or so.

My first time down to this area in ages was yesterday. I was surprised to see just how big this is.

So what happens to the TTC's existing streetcar yards once this thing is operational and the CLRVs are gone?

Do they still need Greenwood? Does it get covered in condos? They've built a two-track high-roof LRV maintenance shed at Roncey, which begs the question of what's going to become of the existing low-roof sections that are really only good for maintaining the CLRVs.

They both get used for these new cars.

There might only be 204 new cars, compared to the current 247 cars, however with the new cars twice the length of the CLRVs they need a lot more storage.

Look at it this way. The total length of the 195 15-metre CLRVs is 2,925 metres while the total length of the 52 23-metre ALRVs is 1,196 metres for a length of 4,121 metres. However the total length of the 204 new cars (30 metres each) is 6,120 metres. As the new yard only fits in 100 cars, that leaves 104 cars (3,120 metres) to go in the existing 2 yards - neither of which is that big.

The ultimate capacity of the 3 yards combined is only about 264 cars. Interestingly the same number of cars they will have if they go ahead with the purchase of 60 additional cars that TTC has proposed.

The streetcar yard near Greenwood and Queen is called Russell.

There is also an option for another 60 new streetcars, depending on funding. If they continue to use the CLRV's after all the 204 new streetcars arrive, I would expect they'll exercise that option.

The 204 new streetcars don't all arrive until 2019 (assuming they can deliver them on time, and recover the delays to date). I believe that the option has to be exercised well before then. A TTC report from late June said that the decision date is 2014.

I checked out the Russell yards for Doors Open last month and staff confirmed that the facility's definitely not going away anytime soon.... as the old fleet is gradually replaced, a percentage of the new cars will be stored there. It might mean that the yard itself will be a little less busy once the new Leslie Barns comes online, but it will still remain a going concern. There have been a number of inquiries about the fate of the place - some would love to see it become a permanent home to the Leslieville farmers market, but that's only four years old and it may be several years yet before it gets a permanent home and at this point the Russell yard solution is just a pipe dream.

A shot on Eastern from last weekend.
