I appreciate the thoughtful response and I think you make some good points. Let me ask this though. Should we maybe think about going with an entirely different system (at least for the utilities most often ripped up) couldn't we lay the telecom cables under the sidewalks which could be removable concrete slabs? Rather than under the roads where asphalt has to be cut into? Also, the city should hold the utilities to a higher standard of patch-up work when they're done and force them to come back if they do a lazy job. I've seen good patches and horrible ones.

Any cutting of existing roads/sidewalk or what every "SHOULD" be replace with today quality of standards for rebuilding what was torn up in the first place on X dime. It better be a good dime.

Far cheaper to put various utilities under sidewalks than the roads.

There is a life cycle for every things and it depends on how it was manufacture as well installed. How things were manufacture and installed a 100 years ago is different than today and will be different in 50 years.

As the city rebuilds itself, it should be putting everything underground and bring the underground items up to current standards. Because Toronto is getting rebuilt block by block, hard to put a time limit when fresh rebuilt roads/sidewalks can be torn up again. It also depend on the time frame for redevelopment of part or whole blocks since the developers control this in the first place.

We are witnessing the end of an era for overhead as they will disappear when the next fleet is here by 2040. Technology will have advance to the point that pans/pole will no be needed to move the fleet like today. It exist today at a cost, but that cost will drop in the coming years.

All the worry about this was unfounded. Guess it was closed for a short time, since I drove up Leslie yesterday and there was no sign of a broken watermain. All lanes were open.

It was a broken watermain apparently. I don't think anyone expected it to be closed more than a day or so.

It's a shame that with all the effort spent on the architecture, that all you see driving along lake shore is that HUGE concrete wall. I know they're still working on landscaping etc.... but still.....
