I’m glad there isn’t a link. Taking the ferry makes it way more fun.

Well, like the Billy Bishop pedestrian tunnel, they wouldn't get rid of Ferry service if they built one here.

I'd certainly prefer a tunnel because I'm sure it would be a free way to access the island (I'm incredibly cheap).

A link doesn't make much sense. A link from Bay Street would cost a fortune to build and maintain and would be a long walk. Same with a link bypassing the airport. The only practical spot is deep in the Portland. The ferries are the cheapest, most convienent way to the islands.

Some progress. Underground infrastructure and gutters are installed. Framing for the paths is mostly done and cobblestones can be seen ready for installation.

Still, this seems like a few months away at best. None of the landscaping has started and the area closest to Queens Quay is still a messy excavation. I don’t think this will be done in time for the busy Summer season unless they significantly pick up the pace — pretty much right now.

You really can't (or shouldn't) do bricklaying or landscaping until the frost is all out of the ground but both can then happen pretty fast. If they start by May 1 I bet most will be done by June 1.

That makes sense but there seems to be a lot more work than just installing the cobblestone. The north side of the site that connects to Queens Quay is still just a messy excavation. From what I’ve seen walking by every few weeks, most of the work through the Winter concentrated on the walkway closer to the ticket booths and the Jack Layton statue.

That said, it’s worth looking back at how bad this highly visible tourist attraction was and the major improvement that it’s about to receive. I’m kind of retroactively embarrassed that tourists saw this...

Things are flying now. There were about a dozen guys working on different parts of the path. There's also a long tent up so that cobblestone work can be done in sun and rain. It's like they just suddenly realized that tourist season starts in a few weeks and there'll be hoards of people walking through here to get to the ferry.

Yeah that April snowstorm definitely didn't help. I bet the mad rush wasn't a planning issue - just an unfortunate weather conundrum.

The funding isn't there yet, so it might be awhile.
