Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

I do hope Metrolinx and the TTC will actually look to Europe and do better research on how they handle de-icing on trolley wires over there. While its only a once per 40 years or so occurrence, lets be better prepared on a larger overhead network in the future.

Although I believe in durability and resilience, I don't think it's worth planning a system or engineering our technology to deal with once in a lifetime events. I hardly fault the TTC for shutting down streetcar service right now.

I also don't think the Europeans have much to teach us about how to run a LRV during an ice storm. Ice storms of this magnitude are kind of rare outside of North America.

Calling local residents, graphic artists and copywriters who have a flair for design, a passion for the written word and a soft spot for Eglinton! Together with the Upper Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) and Metrolinx, we are launching a contest in support of businesses on Eglinton and are in search of a unique and creative poster design. Your design must encourage Ward 21 residents to double their efforts to shop locally during the Crosstown construction that is taking place along the Eglinton corridor.

The contest deadline is Friday, January 24th at 5:00pm. Approximately 1000 signs will be produced and displayed along the stores on Eglinton and in the neighbourhood. A panel of judges will select the winning design and notify the winner by February 14th, 2014. The contest winner will receive $500 cash from the BIA.
Poster designs and submissions must follow this guideline:

  • designed in 4-colours
  • include a catchy slogan (do not include the slogans "Shop Locally", "Shop Local" nor "Experience Eglinton")
  • submitted in digital format – jpeg (2.5MB minimum) or in hard copy
  • include your name, brief biography (250 words), rationale for your design (250 words), daytime telephone number and an email address (in both the digital and soft copy versions of your design)
Submissions may be dropped off (between the hours of 9.30am-3.00pm) or mailed to:

Honestly, I'd like to go to Eglinton West and get some Jamaican food, and go jogging or biking down the Cedarvale ravine trails in the summer, but unless I bike or walk there, it seems like it could be difficult. I'm assuming LRT construction there has slowed down traffic & buses quite a lot? I also wish the bus would continue across Yonge, instead of having to switch buses at Eglinton station. Maybe I'll use the next street north instead.

The poster design contest is for the Upper Village BIA, not for the Eglinton West BIA.

Upper Village BIA is much more Jewish.

I meant washrooms within the fare zone (not everyone who has to do their business has a Metropass to go to the Loblaws atop St. Clair West or a random business in Marlee Vilage or Lawrence Square or Yorkdale Shopping Centre and come back without paying extra).

At the above grounds stops, there are no "paid areas". So you actually use a neighbourhood restaurant washroom, if you have five or ten minutes.

Don't know if turnstiles will or will not be used on some or all the Crosstown underground stations.

Speaking of Crosstown stations, I was reading about London's Overground & Underground systems, and I found it really cool that many of their stations are integrated with existing heritage buildings. The entrances on a lot of them look inconspicuous, but they look good.

A lot of examples here:

This one looks cool for example:

It reminded me of the Christopher St. PATH station in NY:

The only station entrance I could think of in Toronto that's like that is Spadina station:

Mt Pleasant station on the Eglinton Crosstown will be another:

I was really happy to hear that they will be using the 2nd cup building.

Maybe there will be future opportunities for stations like that when the DRL is built eh?

I don't think London's stations are integrated with heritage buildings... I think they are purpose built train stations that happen to be old!!!!
