Toronto Bathurst Quay Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | Kearns Mancini

The last pic is of a (very large) cruise ship docked at Polson pier. If we can see them from here means they can see us. Just sayin’! Btw the waterfront promenade along Bathurst Quay is so tranquil and pretty! Lol 🤔Taken 21 July.

Is there a plan to do anything with the pier and walkway going past little Norway park? It’s a nice little walk and gives you a great view of the island airport. It just looks bad and abandoned.

@DSC had a similar query last year.

@bowen was kind enough to offer this insight:

Part of the problem with the quay west of BB Airport is that its ownership is unclear. It was built by the Federal Dept of Public Works over 100 years ago (there's a plaque) and has subsequently been the responsibility of the City (when we ran the Port, through the Port Commission) and now, maybe Ports Toronto. Nobody wants to fix it in case they then have to 'take it over'. It does need some work and the longer this remains unresolved the more extensive this will be.

I think it's the same situation with the quay at the east end of Ward's Island where the quay wall along the Eastern Gap also needs some repairs. (The section of this quay to the north of this photo and sticking into the Harbour was in VERY rough shape and 'someone' fixed that a couple of years ago.) Link to an article published today in the Daily Commercial News on the start of construction for ‘Bathurst Quay Common’.

Also, for interest, here’s a close up look at the iconic ‘Canada Malting Co.’ branding on the north silo. This was applied with some sort of tar paper that has been flaking off for decades, hence why it appears (from grade) as paint that has faded unevenly. We’re fully restoring the logo (both sides), but have to first repair and tint the concrete underneath. So the lettering will be removed completely and reinstalled from scratch. To ensure a perfect re-creation we’ve completed a laser scan of the existing installation, which will be used to create a full scale template for a new and careful application with paint. A skillful collaboration between ERA Architects, Brook Restoration and Best Painting (the latter of whom is also responsible for our ongoing concrete tinting).

Today on Blogto it was announced that the Silos will host a projection on its east side for Nuit Blanche by Mark Dorf. Looking forward to it as it will be the first chance for many members of the public to have a reason to visit the site.

FYI: our Bathurst Quay project team will also be on site this Saturday night with a pop-up consultation booth to discuss the future of Spadina Pier. If you come to see Mark Dorf/The Bentway’s installation, please drop by the booth to say hello and learn more. Project web page up very shortly.
