The Crane in Question.
I was actually looking at the two buildings (8 Gladstone and Fashion House) deciding which Terrace Unit to get. The layout was much better at 8 Gladstone and it was 250K cheaper than the unit at Fashion house.... of course fashion house has the infinity pool.

16 March 2013: It's kind of bizarre, but the denser the area becomes the more suburban it feels. The hipsters are fleeing--and so are the wealthy art buyers. In the end what will be left? A sort of Downtown Yonge c.1997 feel? Check'n out the ghetto:

I would say that the last photo you posted shows that the spirit of queen west is alive and well. To make a sweeping statement about the whole neighbourhood going in the dumps without any statical proof is unfair. Queen west does not feel "suburban" in any way or shape. This morning I took a walk down Queen from Spadina to Dufferin and I have to say that it is still one of the most interesting stretches of Toronto, and aside form the new store fronts in the fire damaged section of queen the vibe of the neighbourhood was exactly as it was when I came to Toronto for University in the late nineties. (Suspect Video not with standing.... that place was my favourite!)
The hipsters aren't going anywhere just yet, that 1997 Yonge street esthetic you are talking about is exactly what they like. Brooklyn hipsters started to migrate to Detroit a few years ago because it was more "real"
Plus with the neighbourhoods of cityplace and liberty village just to the south full of young 20 somethings looking to escape from their 450 sq foot cells, Queen west is one of the last areas of the city where there is a palpable energy of creativity and youth.
Today - Windows up the 7th Floor, one more to go. The crane has also been taken down.

Well said Crimson Shadows. I feel the same way about Queen West.
If it weren't for the photos posted by urbandreamer I would have blocked him/her long ago.
There's only so much "this area is the next Scarborough"..."that area is the next Jane/Finch" one can take about pretty much every neighbourhood of Toronto that is "graced" with urbandreamer's presence.

You should thank him for his photos and its fine he can make his own comments good or bad.Sorry not all projects in a neighbourhood is going to be a positive addition to the area and if the so call "hipsters" move out where are they going,basically all the centre core of Toronto is being developed.

Can people please stop using the term “hipster”? Wouldn't “artist” apply in these situations? “Hipsters” implies that people with esoteric/experimental taste/interests are merely trying to be hip.
