Toronto 2024 Olympic Bid (Dead)

Let's talk about which neighbourhoods we are willing to sacrifice to build Olympic venues.

We heard you the first time, and it's just as absurd when you repeat it. There is plenty of land to be built on and Canada isn't the kind of country where you just expropriate housing for sporting events.

Where in Toronto is that land? Or are we only hosting it in name and building venues in the greenbelt?

The easiest, most obvious choice is the portlands. They could kick start that area similar to lower donlands by building the Olympic village in the portlands and maybe a few venues.

Do you ever get out of your house?

Go to the Portlands. There is nothing there. It's so close you can walk to it from downtown.

There is also plenty of space at Woodbine, Exhibition Place and possibly Downsview.

And how many venues do you think will be built here?

Two major ones (Olympic Stadium and Aquatics Centre) at most. And the map really doesn't communicate the scope of the Portlands - this is not even one quarter of it (not even counting the lands at the eastern end, around the turning basin.

Come to think of it there is a pretty large strip of open area North of York U which would be connected to the subway and allow the venues to be used by York U after the games, but I'm not sure who this land belongs to or if it has an earmarked purpose.

The Olympic stadium has to be in the Portlands, no ifs ands or buts about it.

Toronto has an opportunity to present a fairly centralized bid, with the IOC-friendly skyline view behind the stadium, etc.. (this is all marketing).

Otherwise, what are our options? Downsview, Mr Christies...?
