Top AIDS researcher to leave Montreal for U.S. institute

One of the top AIDS researchers in Canada is moving to the United States because of cuts in funding, he says.

Rafick-Pierre Sékaly has extensive expertise in vaccine research, including new approaches for HIV and cancer vaccines.

"I am truly excited about the opportunity to develop an outstanding institute for immunotherapy," Sékaly said in a release announcing his appointment as scientific director of the new Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute in Florida.

Sékaly said he is leaving because of cuts in science funding. He is taking a group of more than 30 scientists with him to Florida to continue their vaccine research, the institute said.

Jay Nelson, director of the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute in Portland, Ore., who will co-direct the facility in Florida, called it a coup to recruit a scientist of Sékaly's calibre.

Sékaly's lab in Montreal has received research grants from the federal government, the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Sékaly has published more than 200 articles in scientific journals including Nature, Nature Medicine and the Journal of Experimental Medicine. His work has resulted in 20 patents.

In January, the federal budget called for $147.9 million in cuts over three years to the three agencies that grant research funds to universities.

In March, a group of scientists, many working in fields of basic research such as mathematics, signed a letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper asking him to reverse the funding cuts. That letter has since attracted more than 2,200 signatures.

This is a horrible blow to the health research community in Canada, and an exemplar of Harper's policies in the real world. Canada has world class research institutions, and I doubt this move can be reversed, but if someone can come in with an emergency plan it would be great. Especially if Ignatieff wins a surprising majority election this summer.

Something needs to be done to protect and promote Canada's science and research community.

Not even $700 million is spent annually in the world (collectively between all world governments and private enterprise) on an HIV vaccine per year, and Canada has lost one of the world's greatest research programs along with the what is going on in France and other organizations in the US.

Hah, watch this be spun as a reason why we need privatized medicine.

Harper's cuts to Science & Tech are baffling, especially as they come at a time when a bunch of support is being given to primary industries and manufacturing. Science & Technology are the kinds of jobs that can drive our economy for a long time - and he doesn't seem to care? Weird.

Thankfully we'll be stimulating our economy by subsidizing the resodding of lawns, paid for with cuts to research grants. What visionary leadership.

You-know-who needs to placate his zealot base who believes AIDS research is evil because AIDS is God's way to punish homosexuals.

This current government appoints a less than stellar individual as a science minister who confuses faith with science, what does the base expect?

Definitely not the direction i want Canada to go in. Still, with so many out of work, meaning a much smaller tax base and a much larger drain on benefits, how does the government fund all the things we have come to demand? No matter what they cut they will be met with (fierce) opposition, and raising taxes is hardly the stimulus-type of strategy that most economists are calling for in these times. Difficult to win really.

Raise the GST. It will stimulate the economy in the short-term as people race to get durable goods purchases in before the hike, causes minimal harm to the economy (as taxes go), and raising it back to where it was would return us to surplus once this recession passes. As it is, we are in a structural deficit created by the CPC.

does anyone see some sort of a avro arrow cancellation parallel here?

Conservatives probably still view AIDS as "gay" disease, so it is no surprise they would cancel AIDS research. To them, AIDS is a good thing. AIDS is God's punishment for a sinful lifestyle. And less gays = less votes for the Liberals.

Its similar in the fact that a major achievement has been abandoned; however, there are things that have come out of this. His work will be continued - albeit in the states - and no one can take back the years of technology that was developed against HIV from his resources in Montreal.

I've followed HIV research more closely in the past few years, and the Sékaly name has appeared before. The team has contributed to the world goal of HIV vaccine and they have contributed deeply to HIV treatment. A lot of the newer drugs I think are using technology developed out of Sékaly labs and also the labs in france particularly.

Its been a while since I've read about this particular institute in Montreal, but at least the team's work can continue in Florida... I can't help but imagine if someone could come in, give him the financing and resources he needs to stay in Canada. Say, a surprise summer election where things change? LOL

Probably not possible, but fun to think about. ;)
