TCHC: 501 Adelaide E / 288 King E (14s, aA)

AGTO:

Oops - I think I misread something you've posted. My apologies for my reaction.

I am actually a bit angry at your friend for willfully cheating the system now.

AoD

Wonderful. Then you are basically letting your friend scam the system off. And getting all huffed up over it. You ARE right, our taxdollars should indeed not go to this individual.

Yes, that unit should indeed be better used for a needy family of 3. What are you going to do about it?

AoD

I'm letting him? It's amazing the amount of power you've attributed to me...thanks ;)

I'm not "huffed up", you are, Alvin.....hence your frothy, angry tone.

What are you going to do about it?

move in with him, and rent my condo out for $3200/month....live off of your subsidy ;)

Perhaps this topic re: TCHC should become a separate thread?

I know 3 couples in a TCHC building in High Park area that live in gigantic suites, paying about $300/month for the privilege.

While all 3 couples are relatively recent immigrants, they all drive brand new cars and probably make combined income of $100,000 plus. (They're all professionals.) How did they cheat the system? They speak a common language, they came here "with nothing" (yeah right:rolleyes:), and they spend at least 4 months of the year out of the country. Why they love living for so cheap? They're saving money for a big house in the 'burbs....

Wooba, could it be possible for you to take some pictures of the suites you are talking about (ie. with a camera phone so you don't get into trouble).

as they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words.

those units would have to be about 1700-2000 SF with luxury finishes like granite, hardwood, good views, nice sized outdoor spaces, etc.

Honestly I wouldn't feel comfortable taking pics. It may well be ok, but I'm not sure if there would be any kind of legal problems posting pics of the inside, so I'd rather not risk it.
However, when I get a chance I'll take a look at the drawings and give you the approx sq/ft of a couple of the larger units.

How is that possible, when all income statements are checked, along with tax forms? They may be working under the table but in that case, they are stealing from all Canadians and probably collecting welfare too. Either way, they should be charged and deported asap. (If found guilty, of course)

Whoops! The rent sign is gone.

I'll try to remember to get the tel# to post on my way home or tomorrow coming in. I'm sure they'll be happy to get some applications -- that's a BIG building to fill (and, yes, I know there's a long waiting list, but don't they want to mix up the renters?)

Makes me wonder -- did I imagine it? Was it just for the ground floor retail? Sorry - don't know the answer.

I'm finding this building somewhat odd. There's only one single door to enter from King and only one single door from Adelaide. Doesn't seem like much considering there's retail and a lot of units within.

Is it even confirmed that there will be retail? I think the entire main levels may be rec centers.

Gee, that never happens at all!

Getting to Canada/Toronto is literally striking pay dirt for people around the world who understand that our champagne-socialist society will take care of all, regardless of need. Criticize public spending here and get branded a fascist redneck. Criticize immigration policy here and get branded a racist. It's the perfect climate for those who would want to abuse the system... and yet we are surprised they do????

Immigrants are not to blame, we are. Many come here wanting to work hard and contribute to society. It is us who let them down by allowing the system they work so hard to contribute to be abused.

It borders on classism that an economically disadvantaged person can't have more than one bedroom. It's no different than the guy complaining this location and finishes are too good for the poor. The fact that there maybe a short supply of units is just an excuse.

I find this sense of entitlement to be astounding, not to mention the lack of logic: limited funds and limited resources are not trifling 'excuses' they are realities! People aren't entitled to *anything*. A compassionate society offers help to those in need when needed, but that's all. By definition this is about basic necessities; shelter, a little privacy, basic amenities, cleanliness and safety. It's not about the luxury of a desired extra room or upgraded finishes.

It is the *responsibility* of all in society to pay taxes and contribute by any means possible, freeing up precious resources for those who truly need them. It's not about some jobs or certain levels of pay being 'beneath' somebody (minimum wage should ensure this), or about being entitled to luxuries or to follow one's life's dream or passion. Nonsense! Those are the things that motivate us to do better and things we strive for, but they are not essential or 'rights' as you would characterize them.

I think you're living in the wrong country and the wrong city. lol

That there hasn't been a housing program and/or subsidy in about 20 years is more an excuse than limited funds and resources. And, again. I'm not talking about a handout. I'm talking about a guy paying rent for a two bedroon townhouse. Not everyone receives massively discounted rental rates and neither can the city's housing corporation afford to offer massively discounted rates. Through the merger/downloading, TCHC has more units than it can maintain.

No, you're talking about a single guy in a two story two bedroom townhouse, a block from Yonge street, whose rent is subsidised by the rest of us.

I think you're living in the wrong country and the wrong city. lol

LOL, I sometimes wonder. I was kind of raised in the old school, by immigrants, that even to take unemployment was an emotionally difficult thing to accept.
