Supertall and near-Supertall Rumour/Speculation Thread

A few other interesting comments. Neither of them are about specific projects, but they do indicate the prevailing mood among developers concerning supertalls in Toronto.

Even at 816 feet, proposed 75-storey condo building still won’t be Toronto’s tallest

“Now, because of the green belt and population growth, it might come to a point where it is economically viable to build 120 storeys at Yonge and Bloor because there is so much demand.” -- UT's own Ed Skira

Toronto’s skyline heads for the clouds

Toronto’s skyline is moving incrementally toward the clouds, says the architect of downtown’s most recently proposed towering condo.

“I think 100 storeys is completely doable in Toronto; that’s sort of the next generation of height,” said Rudy Wallman.

“Minto Midtown (at Yonge-Eglinton) defined kind of the first wave of going beyond 30 storeys when they went up to 40, 50 storeys which was very controversial at the time. They broke the mold, and now it’s 60, 70 storeys; so, the next kind of level is the height of Aura (75 floors and 264 metres at Yonge-Gerrard) and even taller than that — 90, 100 storeys."

This is more of a pre-rumour, but still possibly significant. This site could certainly support something very tall, if it has indeed been sold to a developer.

1 BLOOR WEST

@ShadiaSarrafi Does anyone know who bought #1BloorWest! Not sure but exciting...

I don't know if the lot is big enough but that's where I want Canada's first 0.5km(500m)+ to be.
105 Davenport Rd (the northern end of Bay Street) might a fantastic place to put a serious landmark, too.

Though it will have more floors than the Trump Tower, it will be approximately 100 feet shorter - and only - 240 metres.

Using feet and metres in the same sentence. How Canadian is that.

Wow things sure have quieted down over the past month since that little flurry of speculation and proposals.

Well then here you go:

"As a result of delayed condo launches in 2011, and due to the number of new sites rumoured and under development in the GTA, we are expecting a busy 2012 in terms of new condo launches,”. “We are expecting to see some epic and mind-blowing new condominium buildings and sites coming to market in 2012, specifically centred around Toronto's Yonge Street and the 905 region.”

Ironically enough, from an article on how the condo boom might be ending.

What is more interesting, is what "level" of construction of condos/multi unit residential is the apparent "boom" and what is the normal level of activity? If this was investigated then I suspect the outlook would or might be different

Yes another Ma tower by Cityzen is coming to Mississauga in 2012. Spring 2012 perhaps? It may be rather tall!

UD, over at SSP you said the new Ma project would be with Aspen Ridge....which is correct?

By LeftCoaster on SSP:

"Some news regarding one of the possible supertall sites should be coming out within the first two weeks of the new year."

Another post by LeftCoaster on SSP:

"There might be a major change coming to Yonge Dundas square that will bring a lot of Caltrane's favourite "chichi" people to the area.

Its all very "hushhush" right now but I'll break the news when it's appropriate."
