About the Show

The daring new, action-packed game show Downfall is played atop the roof of a downtown Los Angeles high-rise, where contestants quickly try to answer a series of trivia questions against the clock in seven rounds. Fabricated facsimiles of all prizes – which include a pair of jet skis, a grand piano and a new car – are placed on the largest conveyor belt ever seen on TV with a pile of cash at the end ranging from $5,000 to $1 million. In each round, players try to answer all the questions before their prizes and cash go over the edge, off the roof and sent crashing 100 feet to the street below. If the cash goes over the side of the building, then the game is over and that player is eliminated.

stuff which can be donated to the less fortunate especially in a recession are destroyed and this is treated as entertainment in the U.S.A(why I am not not surprised?) and CTV who recently cry to the CRTC claiming they cannot afford local tv is buying this crap?

What a horrible show, breaking perfectly good items for entertainment, when they could be donated, or sold for donations. What a wasteful, tasteless show, this is pathetic.

What a pathetic, tasteless show. I was horrified to watch perfectly good items be thrown off a building! Are you kidding me? There are millions of people on this earth who could either a) use those items or b) use the money those items are worth.

I refuse to watch this show.

Destroying stuff for entertainment? Way to go America.

Oh c'mon it's just mindless filler entertainment for the masses until the Fall TV line-up comes back. Certainly no worse than Deal or No Deal or 1 vs 100. You don't think far more valuable stuff is wasted on a daily basis for no reason? The cars and furnitures being thrown off are props to my understanding and the rest of the stuff is of minimal worth anyway (popcorn machine, wine cabinet). Face it, without the dropping-stuff-off-of-building bit it'd just be "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" only with dumber contestants and a less charismatic host.
 
I am planning to cancel my cable this fall once my contract ends. Free to air and the internet make cable TC useless.
 
I personally can not understand the mindset of reality TV whatsoever. Are our lives here really so boring that we have to watch other people doing interesting things? You know, there's a different remedy for that: get out and do something interesting yourself. But even from an escapist perspective, it's a really terrible way to spend your time.
 
Um...that's what TV is. Watching people do interesting things. Whether it's so-called "reality" tv or it's scripted tv, that's why people watch tv. Why is interesting scripted tv more worth watching than interesting unscripted tv? If you were using that argumet against all television then ok, but using it only against reality tv just doesn't make any sense.
 
No, no, I pretty firmly believe that a majority of TV is crap. There might be 10 genuinely good shows on TV at a time, but all the rest is either a topic that's been done to death, lacks any depth, or is otherwise uninteresting. TV literally puts you into a trance; IIRC, on average, watching a TV show will result in a brain function that's only a couple levels above that of being in a coma. Literally the lowest brain function you can maintain while remaining conscious, and your brain's still way more active in unconscious periods such as REM sleep than when watching TV. There are specific shows that are able to pull out deep meaning and an emotional experience, and I endorse those. Ones that you end up crying at the end, or are left wondering why characters did what they did, or are still jumpy from being on the edge of your seat. A little bit of fun escapism is never a bad thing.

But the problem is that TV's grown hugely, and it now encompasses a huge amount of that crap programming that only retains you because it's literally the most energy-efficient thing for your body to do. The same thing goes for a lot of movies and video games, and to a lesser extent, books as well. They've all lost their quality control through a huge stream of consumerism that doesn't really value that experience you have. I personally don't watch any of those B-list movies that are specifically made as filler, and the same goes for video games that I buy.

When I watch a Reality TV show like Survivor or Wipeout or John and Kate + 8, I sure as hell don't feel any emotional connection. All I see is people trying to step over others to get their 15 minutes and as much cash as possible. Sure, you might encounter that one single american mother who wants to get $50 k to pay for her son's chemo treatment, or that young grandfather who wants to make his grandchildren happy. But from what I've seen, those people are a big minority compared to everyone else in reality TV.

EDIT: I'd be fine if Reality TV could have a deeper meaning that actually provokes thought or has a deeper emotional connection. The motivator needs to move away from money and their 15 minutes to something more meaningful. For instance, just pulling something out of the hat, I might watch something like people on the street debating issues or giving a little 10 minute story of their most favorite moments of life, or giving their own little innovative 2 cents. But when they're just answering questions or trying to get to the finish for their $50,000, I'll pass, thank you.

CTV Applies for Cancon Flexibility for Local Stations

CTVglobemedia Inc. has asked the CRTC to reduce the Canadian content requirements for its 24 over-the-air television channels across the country as part of the commission's new approach to group-based licensing.
