Rob Ford's Toronto

Prior to bestowing the award, the TPM delegation will be holding a press conference tomorrow morning at 8:30 AM by the elevator on the ground floor of City Hall to discuss the Golden Dukes.

If they are trying to present the award to Ford, someone should tell them that 830 is waaaaaay too early. They need to hang out at the elevator around noon, and they would have a better chance of spotting Ford!
Although it is be Friday, and Ford may not show up at all.

The Ford boost helped Holyday get to where he is, so it's payback.

Ford has really done a turnaround, he's looking much healthier, he's "more" on the ball than usual and he shows up, so if he could only master the English language he would be even more of a true threat come October.
I'm pretty sure there's a Council meeting Friday morning so Ford will be there, it should be a good one! It was requested by a Councillor (I completely forget who, but he wants answers re: the ice storm response) and Ford either granted the special meeting or called it, not sure which.

Formal complaint filed about Rob Ford’s use of staff

A Toronto man has filed a complaint against Mayor Rob Ford with the city’s integrity commissioner, alleging improper use of influence and city property. His complaints stem from allegations outlined in a police document released in court and in media reports.

Ray Fredette, 62, filed his formal complaint to the Office of the Integrity Commissioner last week, claiming that Mr. Ford broke the council code of conduct by using city-paid staff and resources for personal benefit, as well as to benefit his own private business.

Outside the radio station where Ford made his remarks Sunday, opponents were even more vocal.

Ray Fredette showed up to the radio station before Ford hit the air, carrying a sign reading “We need a real mayor” and “Mayor in name only.”

Ray Fredette marched around the square carrying a yellow sign that said “Mayor in name only.” He doesn’t accept Ford’s apology.

“It wasn’t even an apology, don’t grace it with that word,” he said.

“For me, he should resign. That’s just on a political level. On a personal level he should seek some help.”

Dozens of demonstrators clustered around a public stage outside city hall to demand Ford leave office immediately, repeatedly chanting “resign!”

“That’s the best thing for him, really, and for the city. Because the other two ways of getting him out are by handcuffs or by gurney, and I don’t want either,” said retired teacher Ray Fredette, 62.

Doug Ford’s response to Janet Davis’ cuss was sexist and she deserves an apology of her own

What Ford did wrong was to bring Coucillor Davis’ femininity into the equation while demanding an apology.

“You call yourself a lady? Give me a break.”

[...]

Councillor Davis deserves to be treated as more than some antiquated notion of a lady, quiet and observant, that you might like her to be.

She gave her apology, now where’s yours?

He'll be there today, The meeting to beg for Provincial cash is today.

What drives me particularly crazy about that is that Ford himself makes the argument that there is "only one taxpayer" ... when it suits him.

And this is a huge problem, because it muddies the waters about what programs should be funded, and how. Ford applies it to programs he doesn't like, and his implication is, "Doesn't matter if it's municipal funding or provincial funding, you're still paying for it, Toronto!" And naturally it's that last part that plants itself in the Ford Nation mind. They do a quick mental elision and take "only one taxpayer" to mean "it's all just semantics---whether it's called 'municipal' or 'provincial', it's still the SAME AMOUNT of MY MONEY they're stealing!" Ford makes it sound like paying for municipally funded services and programs is the same as paying for provincially funded services and programs. That's how he's able to convince so many people that they're over-taxed.

But that's the opposite of how taxes work, obviously. It doesn't acknowledge that when you spread them over a wider base, the individual burden is a lot smaller and everybody feels it a lot less. Whether people who live in North Bay should be paying into subsidized daycare or drug treatment programs in downtown Toronto is a whole other (far more complex) conversation. But Ford dumbs it down to the point of a fallacy with "only one taxpayer": Ford Nation takes it to mean that as Torontonians they are unfairly burdened.

Their philosophy of 'running the city like a business' is really just about having things their way and making things easy for their business, and their friends' businesses, and to hell with everything else to do with what a city should be and do.

Run the city like a business, in order to put business in charge of the city, for the benefit of business.

It should be noted that Rob, by his own admission, has very little involvement in the running of Deco and so can't be credited with its success, but that's what he draws on to establish his credentials as a money-saver. The family pushed him into the political sphere to keep him out of the day-to-day operations of the business and find something else for him to do, drawing on a modicum of personal charm that he has, as well as to obtain political power for the family, to serve their sense of entitlement.

Rob Ford was the CFO of Deco for years.

Who knows what Deco might have achieved if not for that?

Elements of Fascism - I found this link posted in a comments section of CBC (the source is a bit dodgy but it's interesting nonetheless): http://www.rense.com/general37/char.htm

If they thought they could control and suppress the media, they would, and they have tried.

...

And Fords renewed interest in religion, showing up and randomly crashing congregations...

I would say they've tried to control the media as much as they could: shutting out the Star and trying to discredit it at every opportunity, chastisting Warmington for going off-message (i.e., being even slightly critical).

I'm not sure the interest in religion really fits the criteria for fascism, for two reasons. Whereas there have been fascist regimes that co-opted religions as a way of consolidating power, or created quasi-religious belief systems to support themselves, there have also been ones that were anti-religious or at least anti-clerical. It's not an essential component of the ideology.

Second, it looks to me that Rob is just being opportunistic by playing the role of a black sheep returning to the fold, a sinner seeking redemption. People are dazzled by the apparition of Ford in their midst - it's a miracle! he has seen the light! now he is one of us! - but he really sees them as easy marks. Gullible people who will fall for his humility shtick.

I also don't see Ford (either one) as particularly religious people - they don't seem committed to any beliefs that would affect their ethics or morality, at least.

You are right! It was Josh Matlow who requested it.

I think whatever Deco has achieved in financial terms since the death of Doug Sr has been in spite of Rob Ford. He has said that his work there is limited to reviewing the books for five hours a week at most. That suggest someone else is doing the bulk of the bookkeeping, or it's being overlooked entirely and the company is managing to (appear to) do well through sheer luck.

My guess would be running Olivia Chow's campaign.

Pure speculation, I admit, but my attention was piqued by this post on Kinsella's website today. It's vague, obviously, but between his overt animosity toward Ford, the legal aspect and that familiar 30-day period under which he is obliged to remain quiet, I'm hoping for something good.

http://warrenkinsella.com/2014/01/b...ened-toad-on-a-manitoba-backroad-in-february/

Kinsella said it was "awesome legal news". Sounds like a favourable settlement of McHale's lawsuit. http://warrenkinsella.com/2013/10/gary-mchale-crowd-sourcing-a-lawsuit/

In other news, the police are apparently no longer listing Jaclyn Dawe as missing. What do you think the odds are she fled Canada because she either witnessed something she wasn't supposed to or something incriminating might surface (a video with her and Ford, maybe)?

I would place those odds at less than zero.
