(I realize it's Macleans error not yours) Malala isn't an "Afghan girl" - she's Pakistani.
I may be wrong, but isn't her family Pashtun? Hence the mixup....I guess.
Maybe but that doesn't excuse it, Pashtun is only one tribe/ethnicity across the area, Afghan implies a citizen of that specific country.
