Rob Ford's Toronto

Just an aside re Commisso and Racco bakery...husband lived on St. Clair West and remembers watching Domenic (?) Racco's funeral from Oakwood Collegiate...huge...the place entirely shut down. Not so sure the same would happen today, at least not in the neighbourhood.

Contractors and waste management are the stereotypical "mobbed up" business; almost anything can be used as a front (thinking too much of Walter White and nail salons), and I imagine developers/real estate would be a prime industry for it.

Please, let's not all run with this silly "assumption" that every city in Ontario without a 416 area code is somehow the exclusive domain of rednecks and shitheels.

You've got waaaay more of them in the outer 416 (all of Etobicoke, most of Scarborough, parts of North York, and even certain neighborhoods in "downtown") than in a place like Waterloo.

+1... and the idea that a conservative white establishment (Olde Oakville types) supports Ford is patently wrong. He has his white trash supporters, to be sure, but I'd wager that the bulk of his (dwindling) support comes from the massive immigrant enclaves in and around Toronto (or surrounding areas like Brampton and Mississauga):

Overheard in the office. My boss had a client of Iranian descent over from North York. Following a good five minutes of laughter over the last three weeks worth of antics, the client whips this out:

"You have to admit, he's done a pretty good job. The best job out of everyone in probably the last thirty years. Rob Ford has balanced the budgets. He has a bit of surplus. I like him."

It's sort of sad to say that white trash and many ethnic immigrants share a value system that would unite them in supporting Ford, but middle and high class whites are likely too liberal or too uppity conservative to support such a wreck (now, at least).

I'm actually sitting here listening to two people talk (one I work with and another one is a member of the TPS) about how fiscally responsible Ford is. He saved 1 million dollars. Everybody does stupid things when they are drunk. "I'd vote for him again"..........................................................................................................................................................................

Ask them to explain the $1 million to you. They can't. Then point out how much he has cost the city. That generally bursts their bubble.

Pud99: Good find-this is EXACTLY what I thought of when I learned of the Ford Brothers getting their own TV show on the Sun News Network...
This photo comparison between Rob and Doug Ford and Bob and Doug McKenzie is just PERFECT...

I thought of their parody of the "12 Days of Christmas" and I will start this out with these two gifts:
"On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me a bong (in a tree)"
"On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me two crack pipes"
"On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me (bottles of) one Bourbon, one Scotch and one Beer"
Everyone's imagination can run wild for the next nine gifts...

Tewder: After reading your post it makes me think of the term I use for clueless blind faith right wing supporters: WHITE TRASH CONSERVATISM...

I also want to bring up something that I have been thinking about concerning the Toronto City Council:

After learning of the almost unanimous votes to censure Mayor Rob Ford it makes me think of the parliamentary government
system in Ontario and Canada and the "no confidence" vote to force an election and institute governmental change...

Can the Toronto City Council pass a law to allow this type of vote containing a supermajority that would be needed to
censure and/or remove an incompetent Mayor or other City official from office?

Correct me if I am wrong but were the recent City Council votes to censure Mayor Ford something like 48-2 with only
the Ford Brothers voting in the affirmative?

Would there be support for this type of law in Toronto?

LI MIKE

In less than an hour Mayor Ford will be giving his first public address since the coup d'etat earlier this week. The Mayor will be speaking to a group of 500 business people at Casa Loma.

Toronto SUN reporter Don Peat posted the following at his blog.

Mayor Rob Ford is taking a break from his ongoing crack cocaine scandal tonight to give a speech at Casa Loma to around 500 business people.

The event is an economic development party planned before Ford’s drug controversy exploded into worldwide headlines.

Media have been invited to cover the event and Ford’s speech but won’t be permitted to ask the mayor questions.

Here’s the rules for media covering the event sent out by city officials today:

Media Instructions for the Signature Sites series event November 21 at Casa Loma

When you enter the Casa Loma parking lot there will be media parking for trucks and cars on the East side of the parking lot.
Media will not be able to access the building until 5:45 p.m. Cabling into the building will not be permitted. You will be asked to remain in the parking lot area until the entry time.
Media will be escorted by City Communications staff into an assigned stanchioned area inside the room where the speeches will occur.
Media will be expected to remain in the stanchioned area for the duration of the event. Remarks are expected to begin at 6 p.m. and will be done by 6:30 p.m.
After the speeches are completed Mayor Ford’s staff have indicated that Mayor Ford will not be taking media questions.
Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37 Scarborough Centre), Chair of the City’s Economic Development Committee, will be available for media questions after the speeches occur in the stanchioned area.
After the media has spoken with Councillor Thompson, they will be asked to vacate the venue but may remain in the parking lot area if they wish to do so to finalize their coverage.

Should be interesting.
