Rob Ford's Toronto

I saw a television clip yesterday (i think it was on CBC) of Rob Ford talking about getting tough on drug related crimes and that he was tired of "hug a thug" programs. He said he believes in getting tough on crime with longer sentences for drug crimes. It was filmed a few years back but I wonder if he feels the same way today?

I say, live by the sword, die by the sword.

Peepers, the reason most people are harder on right wing, get-tough-on-crime types, is people are sick of hypocrisy. If these people go through life being tough on other people who are down on their luck, well, when they screw up, they should expect the same lack of compassion, that they have shown to others. If you're going to tear other people down, you better make sure you walk the strait and narrow because when you screw up, all the people you tore down, will be right there to return the favour.

You know what they say, what goes around, comes around. With all the ignorant and heartless things Ford has said and done, he rightfully deserves, everything he gets.

I am all for going after hypocrites but there is a double standard when it comes to left-wing hypocritical politicians and right-wing hypocritical politicians (see my above comment).

If in fact Ford was caught on video smoking crack (and I believe the account's reported in the Star and Gawker to be true) then his past pronouncements make his conduct even worse and no doubt he will pay a high price for it.

Peepers:

Except, like the various articles have mentioned - there is a) no evidence he engaged in the act and b) that it was in a licensed palour - and I quote from the very website you've posted:

His defenders would say that anyone who takes particular issue with it either hates Layton or never had to live with the pain that comes with back trouble even (or especially) after a hernia operation. They point out correctly that the place was city licensed as was the masseuse and that any good, thorough massage is done with the patient undressed.

Being in a state of undress doesn't equate to being in a sex-act, much less having paid for said sex-act. Plus there was no history, like I've said, of any pattern of buying sex. The same can't be said of Rob Ford and his odd behaviour, of which there are multiple accounts of at this point. Plus can you legitimately say that buying sex has the same impact on the job of a mayor as smoking crack (and showing up as a city representative in an affected state? Honestly? I think most people in general would be more lenient about a politician buying sex so long as it doesn't involve blatant exploitation than one smoking crack and showing up looking dishelved, incoherent - not to mention showing up at work late and leave early.

If you want hypocrisy on the left, I'd have more of a field day with OMERS instead. Definitely a classic example of what socialism and solidarity was all about.

Am I the only one here who is concerned about the extent that gangs may have compromised the political integrity of our mayor?

At this point we are nearly certain that Ford was quite cozy with many of these gang members, one of which has since been killed. Is it possible that these gangs could have encouraged the mayor to make certain political decisions and/or threatened his safety?

This is pure speculation on my part, but there needs to be an investigation into the harm that our mayor and his affiliations have caused to our policial system. Not doing so would send the wrong message to those who wish to compromise our political leaders.

You went from "nearly certain" to "pure speculation on my part" in a heartbeat. Lots of things are possible but I suggest we wait and see how this plays out.

"Almost certain" was regarding the mayor associating with gang members. Images of that have already been released. The speculation was about whether or not they've compromised the mayor.

Anyways, when this video does come out I don't think that TPS and others will have much choice about whether they want to investigate or not. They'll need to if they want to reassure Canadians that our policial system remains intact. Especially since this is following the Montreal scandals and the CSIS report that some unnamed Canadian politicians are under the control of foreign agents.

If it turns out that the video is authentic - and I believe that it is - it means that Ford was associating with known gang members and we can be fairly certain that this was not the first time. This raises a huge issue. How did Toronto Police not know that the Mayor was associating with Somalian gang members? This is a group that Police have under close surveillance.

It has long been obvious to me that Ford and Blair share a symbiotic relationship. Blair turns a blind eye to Ford's legal transgressions (e.g. no charges in the case of distracted driving despite have 100% proof - likewise no assault charges in the case of Daniel Dale).

In exchange for looking the other way Ford gives Blair anything and everything that he wants. Right now it is rumored that Bill Blair would like to have his contract renewed for another five years despite the fact that it does not expire for a couple of years! I wouldn't be surprised if the Board quietly concede to this request and extend Blair's contract for five years in a secret deal without any debate. Such a move is worth $Millions to Blair.

If it is proven that Ford was associating with Somalian gang members there needs to be an urgent outside investigation by OPP or RCMP into what if anything did Bill Blair know about Ford's contacts with organized crime!

Jon Stewart has posted a couple of Tweets:

Unfortunately the video is unavailable in Canada, and Comedy no longer seems to have the episode available on their site.

My guess is that Ford had known about the existence of this recording for a while. In fact I am sure he has seen it, which would explain why he knows he can't deny it.

I think it is very likely that they have trying to shake him down for a while, and when the blackmail failed, or when he refused to pay any more, they went public with it.

I am sure the media circus these low level drug dealers are now involved in was not their first choice of outcomes, and there is little possibility that they went to the media without exhausting the first—far more obvious route—which would be threatening Ford with exposure. Maybe Ford thought they were bluffing….

Well as MetroMan has pointed out, TPS has been aware about this for some time. If the RCMP does investigate and they find that TPS allowed this crime ring with connections to Toronto politicians to operate, quite a few heads could roll.

Whether or not the RCMP investigates depends on how disturbed the public is by all this. Ford could just be charged with some drug crimes and removed from office if the public dosen't care too much. However, if the media does start digging questioning the relationship between Ford and gangs, this situation could get a whole lot worse.

I don't know why Ford would think they were bluffing.

I suspect that the video owners, for whatever reason, thought they'd get more from the media than Ford.

Not that it matters anymore. At this point, it's too late for Ford to buy the video. If the video does mysteriously go off the market and is not published, the police will have little choice but to investigate to see if the mayor was blackmailed. The cat is out of the bag. All Ford can hope for is that the owner decides not to sell the video.
