Rob Ford's Toronto

Doug Ford announced definitively that he is going to run provincially when there's an election. I'm wondering what the protocol is here. Does he have to step down as councillor to run? I mean, can he be running an election full time while still attending to his councillor work? I know it doesn't stop his brother from coaching football...

The thing is, there won't be a spring election. Wynne has been really good at cooling heads and it looks like Horwath may be surprised to find out she's getting a lot done with Wynne as her partner. Hopefully an election is called around the time of the municipal election so that we can get rid of both Fords.

Nope, Dougie's free to hold on to his council seat while running provincially (or federally if he chooses). Many councillors of all political stripes have done this. Raymond Cho's also running for Teabag Tim's party (though he's not such a good fit). But after a mere two years, it does show Doug Ford has little interest in representing his constituents (as if he ever did).

Olivia Chow is the most famous example, but with an interesting twist - the first time she ran for the NDP federally, she kept her council seat, but lost to Liberal Tony Ianno. The second time, to prove she was serious, she resigned (and won).

Wasn't Monday, April Fool's Day?

I sure wouldn't vote for any Ford in any election. May buy the car, but not the person or persons.

A few months ago we were treated to members of the public righting a wrong by raising money to compensate for the attack visited upon a school bus monitor by the students on her bus.
How did that work? Was there some sort of internet agency involved?

Imagine a campaign that would allow the citizens of Toronto to relieve the Mayor of the onerous burden of paying his own legal fees to fight a frivolous charge.

The ultimate survey, express your approval of your Mayor by sending in $5.00.

Technically court found him guilty of the charges laid against him, they just decided to not carry out the sentence because the whole process had (arguably) failed to adhere to protocols from the get go.

If you want to pay the bills of a rich politician who was legally found to be corrupt, help yourself.

I wouldn't cover his legal expenses but I'd gladly fork over his annual salary for him to gtfo immediately and take his twin with him.

And the interesting thing is: Etobicoke North is hardly a Tory shoe-in--it didn't even dump the Liberals federally in '11. So unless there's a landslide of Harris scale or beyond (or Doug turns out to be a party-outpolling populist force--not unlike Chris Stockwell in 1990), he ain't got much of a chance--and given the demo, the PCs could conceivably land third behind the NDP there (it used to be Ed Philip's riding, after all)

I'll give him $3. Its the TTC cash fare needed to go home. I'd just like a mayor (centre-right/right-wing) who actually can lead and has ideas for the city beyond "casinos will pay for transit".

If that is not an option on the table I'll keep my money. But my biggest semi-serious request (since I don't expect much in the way of plans coming out of him besides garbage privatisation) would be for the mayor to decide already what is happening with the gravy train. He's said its over, he's also said its still going. I just ask that he make up his mind. The metaphor is just a tad overused at this point and I prefer he go with something else even just for the benefit of variety.

New staffer in Mayor Rob Ford’s office

Rob Ford has added a new staff member to the mayor’s office bench.

The Sun has learned Dave Price started as the mayor’s director of operations and logistics on Tuesday.

Ford’s office wouldn’t say what the position entails.

Price was Ford’s high school football coach back when he was a student at Scarlett Heights. He was also Councillor Doug Ford’s campaign manager in the 2010 election.

He declined to talk about his new job when approached Wednesday.

“I’m not the story,” Price said.

"Obstruction" is the only way to describe Ford's voting record as a councillor and he's brought that to the mayor's office. I don't think we're going to really 'feel' his lack of vision until all of the things planned before Ford are completed and there are a few years where nothing happens because Ford had no imagination and didn't champion any city-building.

Whaddaya mean? The Fords *did* champion city-building. Y'know, ferris wheels, monorails, subways subways subways--and casinos. It's obstruction from the *other* end that's prevent any of that happening...

Mayor Rob Ford's Toronto

So, folks, if you want to know how Ford Nation frames the lefty pinko ideal of urban transporatation...

...the Silesian Interurbans!

...so, it's a choice, folks, btw/Subways! Subways! Subways! -- or *that*.

(And yet, and yet...there is something about what's captured in those clips that's so rich and enthralling and transfixing. I mean, *I'd* defend it against haters...)

Christopher Hume in the Star: Toronto Mayor Rob Ford helps Hero Burger out of a pickle

To those who tuned in late, this week’s talk about Rob Ford’s “victory” made it sound as if new subway were about to run under Sheppard after all, that a casino promising billions had been approved or a gravy train stopped.

But no, His Worship’s much-heralded win came when city council agreed (22-16) to a deal that will see Hero Certified Burger installed in the refurbished snack bar in Nathan Phillips Square.

“It was great,” a flushed Ford told reporters on Wednesday. “It was a good victory. I want to thank the councillors for supporting it, and now we can get revenue and sell some burgers. We did good today.”

Author Richard Florida called Ford “the worst mayor in the modern history of cities.” That’s putting it politely.
