Rob Ford's Toronto

Or maybe even Sept 1.

Casita mentioned the time is needed because there are 44 wards. But a federal election has the whole country! So, unless there is a more cogent argument, I think the campaign period should be shortened, drastically. I'd like to see it passed along with ranked ballots.

Certainly it would better retain the the attention of the voters.

...and focus the candidates.

Aug. 1 should be the start of the election. It is way worse for an elected mayor to never stop campaigning and refuse to do his job, except for the campaign time leading up to the election to canvas for votes.

That describes RoFo in a nutshell

Good point, casita.

How is this a good point? It is not about how long a campaign the candidate wants. We know how long a campaign Ford wants - 4 years. the point is how long a campaign the citizens want, and how long a campaign is good for the governance of the City. Chow was already getting grief from the likes of Royson James and others for not entering the campaign yet, and the election is 7 months away. The media likes a long campaign because it gives them something to do, but it completely messes up municipal government for 25% of the time (1 out of 4 years).

Technically in a federal election, people are still only campaigning in their ridings (I know that's not how it actually works, people vote for party leaders but it's how it's supposed to work). However, I agree that the campaign period in municipal politics is at least three times longer than it needs to be.

In the spirit of keeping this thread on topic, Rob Ford has created this ugly environment where people work harder on attacking each other than they do on building campaigns. While yes attacking opponents has always been an element of elections, I've never seen this. Chow isn't even officially a candidate and there's already a website attacking her (wonder why the Tory camp hasn't bothered with an anti-Ford website yet? Ruling him out and treating him like a joke is exactly how he got elected last time). This election disgusts me. I'm with JimmiT, I'm sick of it already.

It was explained in Post #22657:

"It makes sense for it to be long when it's not just about political parties. People need time to get to know the alternatives, or otherwise the incumbent would have a massive advantage. Ford has been campaigning for a year now, imagine if the official campaign had 3 months - all candidates would have to compete on those few months versus Ford's 2 years."

I don't think anyone was saying that it was an ineffective way to get votes, merely that it was a crass one.

It's an ineffective way to get enough votes to win.

Plus once he is arrested, less people will even open the door.

There have been a few fiesty apartment dwellers who have cursed the mayor out, thrown the business card back in his face and slammed the door. Not everyone invites him in for coffee.

Yep, one long attack ad. Attack the candidates they fear most, sowing FUD. "Modern Orthodox" politics, identify a "problem", and find a scapegoat to blame for the "problem". Solving problems will only put you out of a job, especially if it's for the wrong people/businesses.

Case in point, RoFo wants to run on his fiscal record, and he has his math skills to prove it, too bad his fiscal record is a disaster, and his math skills are non existent. Somehow people believe him, and any that challenge him are "lefties", "socialists", or "communists". RoFo and DoFo apparently have no idea of the etymology of either "ism", or the difference between partisan (provincial & federal)and nonpartisan (municipal) governments.

The gray hairs on this board remember discussions (at least) about McCarthyism, and the legacies of propaganda.

Also, the magnets he's leaving behind say "Rob Ford mayor" as opposed to "Rob Ford for mayor". So, technically, they're not campaign magnets.

His Deco-invoiced 2010 campaign magnets, paid for with campaign money, said the same thing. He has not reported an office expense for magnets (paid by himself or the city) since being elected.

Isms in my opinion are not good.

Have any of them attacked Ford yet?

Seems insane the other candidates have gone after each other and not him. I know it seems shooting fish in a bucket but he is still swimming!

Would members please take their election discussion to the appropriate UT thread? This thread is to discuss Rod Ford's mayoralty, not Chow's, Stintz's and Tory's candidacy and issues.

Thank you!
