Rob Ford's Toronto

So a friend of Ford's who I know was defending him by saying crack and powder coke are pretty much the same high and that this is only making international headlines because crack has a certain stigma associated with it. I've never tried either but he's right about the stigma part. Still, people would be outraged if he was caught on video doing lines too.

Got to love the ever more desperate parsing of the dead enders still trying to find a way to justify the unjustifiable.

Anyway, you're right "Toronto Mayor Caught Doing Lines On Camera" would register just as highly with people.

What makes the story shocking is not just the 'what' anyway, its the fact that he refused to resign after it came out that he had lied about the cocaine for 6 months.

There are NO examples of a politician refusing to step down after they committed an act of such monstrous dishonesty. it's the fact that he is insisting on hanging on to power that is creating the massive circus surrounding the scandal at this point.

That's why Doug's ridiculous whining about the "bad old Toronto media" is such BS. The US media has never dealt with a politician trying to hang on after a scandal of this magnitude. Down there they do the decent thing and step aside, or they are forced out.

Fits with the police interviews of Price in the ITO where they ask him why he was in contact with the shooting victim at unit 1703, and Price said he had recently been "canvassing the constituents and given pit hundreds of business cards."

5000 cards to be exact! Price is/was a good soldier, apparently (Though he forgot the magnets that time. Dumbass!). But just referring to 'canvassing' (what's the origin of that term anyway?) reminds me of this: There's something about Ford(s) working the towers that's cynical and manipulative. It's like they're working on a quantity strategy in these wards. Like the ambitious kids would do on halloween long ago. "One Tower is equal to like SIX streets! And there's elevators!" kinda thing. Maybe they think if they can lock up the vertical they can trump the horizontal? Dunno. Only so many wards in which that would bear fruit though...

That's a common line (heh) of argument and has some merit, but it astonishes me how many Ford friends/fans talk as if cocaine use were the only wildly inappropriate thing Ford has done while in office. It's as if they haven't read or watched anything over the past ten months.

Or over the past three years. Putting the scandals aside, Rob has shown himself to be entirely ineffective. Take transit. After he lost the Sheppard vote, he pretty much stopped doing any serious work on the file. The Bloor-Danforth extension is the work of Karen Stintz and Glenn De Baermaker. Ford was a last-minute bandwagon jumper. His effort to end the plastic bag fee resulted in an outright ban on the bags, showing he isn't smart enough to line up his vote before going to council. And the casino? Once he saw that he was losing, he should have started floating Woodbine as a compromise location. Instead, he dug in, leading to a vote that killed any prospect of his dream and selling out Woodbine, which he has tried to claim as his version of an "economic miracle."

I could go on, but I'll spare y'all. Personally, I'm glad Ford's major initiatives have failed. But if I was supporter, I'd be pretty angry at his general incompetence and overall laziness when it comes to actually governing.

1000 percent this. It's scary how many people don't see that.

This is untrue. There actually IS a clinical difference between crack and powder cocaine in terms of the intensity/duration of the high due to method of delivery. Several studies show that the onset of the high is much faster with crack cocaine and the duration is much shorter. That has led to a lot of speculation that it is more addictive than powder cocaine but I haven't seen a definitive study on that.

There are also side products produced during pyrolysis of crack that differentiate it from powder cocaine - there are literally different chemicals that are ingested when crack is smoked (notably methylester derivatives). I have no idea what impact that has on addictiveness, but I do suspect that these chemicals make crack more toxicologically damaging to the human body than does powder cocaine.

Let me point out that I have never done either, this is just based on a lot of research I've done on subject due to an issue in the extended family.

Has anyone here actually tried both coke and crack? I'm curious if they actually do have the same effect. I've had both passed to me but I passed it on. Actually one of the last times I partied with Sandro they were passing a crack pipe around in his car.

I've never tried either but I've seen them used (back-stage/dressing rooms at music clubs). Let me just say that I never enjoyed being around people doing this stuff...

He posts on twitter about this stuff all the time under his real name. Last I read he was suspicious as to why OPP have a homicide specialist overseeing the case. And he's also calling for an April arrest.

What's his real name on Twitter?

You still have the right to remain silent, and impose your right to consult with counsel prior to questioning/interrogation, if I understand it correctly.

Yeah it looks like you're correct about that - you're entitled to counsel initially. But it looks like once you've had that consultation you can't make them stop so that you can speak to your lawyer again. Also, you have no right to have your lawyer present.

Awfully quiet from the Ford camp today. Didn't even see a brief statement regarding Massoudi's longtime service to the mayor or a hope for the best in his health issues.

IIRC, beyond shouting out "subways, subways, subways" and that one meeting with developers in his office, I'm not sure he did ANY serious work on the matter. My take on Ford was (and is) he could care less if we didn't build ANY mass transit at all. All he wanted was a smooth drive for his Escalade.
