Rob Ford's Toronto

The more chatter I hear and the more I read, I'm ever more convinced that the #1 reason a sizable group of the public still support Rob Ford is that they perceive him as being a victim of media hounding. They basically feel sorry for him.

I think on all levels that is ridiculous, especially in light of the recent incident which was recorded by private citizens, not the media. There's also nothing the media has reported on in the last three years that hasn't proven to be eventually true. He's the victim of good investigative journalism basically. Moreover, media "hounding" of Rob Ford is more or less related to him not providing the same access former Mayors did and refusing to answer some very important questions. He also refused the CBC and Toronto Star most media requests from Day #1 as Mayor. The media is doing their jobs and he's avoiding them like few public figures ever had previously. The media are also in competition, not in a conspiracy as Doug would suggest. Yet, people see the cameras and mics being shoved in his face and feel sorry for him. Some educated people I know still seem to give him some support for this very reason. He's the rebel fighter against the media machine narrative.

I'm sort of talking out loud here, but I'm not sure how to change the perception of what is actually going on here. The media should be vindicated and thanked, yet it seems to somehow generate RoFo sympathy.

Sympathy misplaced..........big time.

I get this reaction quite often too. Then they start making excuses for his behaviour. And these are not normally ignorant people! I am often left completely baffled.

Now i truly get why he joined politics: To be "selectively liked". To be a hero of his own making, to victims of his own choosing.

He's always been laughed at, always been a failure, always been judged. But if he can return a few targeted phone calls, do some insignificant things to make a few people happy, and to then have those people thank him - well, mission accomplished. Self-validation achieved. He doesn't have to address - or even listen to! - calls from all the disgruntled people.

And, as the rest of us know all too well, he can never, ever get fired.

Let's not forget: at some point he also discovered that answering calls and filling potholes somehow begat this self-perpetuating Legend of Rob Ford as some kind of Robin Hood-esque do-gooder who may be coming to your TCHC building any day now to fix all the problems and personally hand you a twenty.

So that's a bonus.

Very much agree. Only quibble I have is that he probably wanted to be liked by everyone, but is otherwise satisfied with his core.

At least two people have walked out and others are reportedly demanding refunds. In a lovely twist Cp24 has given up and is broadcasting Socknaki's speech instead. This goof can't even haul his ass across the street to be at a 100 dollar per plate function he committed to. What an asshole.

One attendee just tweeted "This is a disaster."

And now two entire tables have stood up and left.

This whole thing is a debacle. CTV even tweeted a link encouraging people to watch live coverage and accidentally posted a link to the porn site bignaturals.com instead of their feed.

Looks like Rob may be a no-show at today's Economic Club meeting. People starting to leave the venue.

I'm trying to imagine the way Soknacki's campaign staff will be laughing in their beers this afternoon, after their candidate gave an on-time, coherent speech to the Board of Trade while their opponent turned up so late to his own speech that people were walking out.

And I sure hope somebody brings this up any time Ford mentions how he brings a private sector approach to public service.

If this doesn't show Ford as being not serious towards his work, I don't know what will. I hope newspapers will make a note of this when they publish his speech tomorrow.

IMO I bet he's probably getting a pre-speech pick-me-up.

I'm watching the livefeed precisely to see if I can spot any telltale signs.

And I'm sure it will be no one's business why Rob was over an hour late for this even through he was only a block away.

Stuck in an elevator for 45 minutes is the excuse
