Roads: Highway 401 Widening - Highway 8 to Highway 410 (MTO, U/C, Planned)

If you toll the 401 & QEW they won't have much choice. But the 407 has different objectives--profit maximization rather than transportation efficiency+cost recovery. 407 charges way more than marginal cost to it, particularly off-peak when capacity is not an issue.

I should have rephrased my earlier post. Most trucking lines will offer 407 services (at a premium), but the customers (Wal-mart, Canadian Tire) always want the cheapest form of shipping possible. This way they can offer lower prices at their stores. Toll all the highways and we'll either have backed up side roads as trucks avoid the newly tolled highways, or force trucks to drive on tolled highways and we pay higher prices for goods at the stores.

There has been some talk that everyone will pay a toll regardless where they drive and will be base on distance travel. This includes all city roads or roads not a highway.

Will that happen is unknown at this time.

There are a number of truck drivers in my family including one owning their own company that is small. They do runs call on time delivery to the point if they are late it will effect the production run of the company they are delivery stuff to in the first place. None of them will use the 407 and prefer to get around paying tolls in the US. This is an example where companies did away with stock piling as the space became too expensive to have.

If the 401 was toll, it would be between KW and Oshawa as its the heavies travel section.

Had a family emergency that caused me to go to London today. Noticed the HOV frames between 25-8 are gone with no HOV lane and that great.

Creditview is missing 2 bathtubs on the north side that could be in place this week or next. Once in place, the 401 has to be close on a Sat night so the 4 centre bathtubs can be place to connect both side. of the 401 that should be open between 8 am to noon Sunday. Saw no signs for any road closure.

Got on the 401 at Mavis with the collectors lane moving at a snail pace while the express was wide open and fast moving. Once past the pinch point the the river, traffic was moving at speed limit.

A lot of has taken place since my last trip,

12 lanes will be come 10 lanes east of Winston Churchill as the bridge was built for 10 lanes like the 407 bridges.

The westbound collector bridge over the Orangeville line 90% complete

The other reason trucking has taken over a significant portion of freight movement is because trucking is heavily subsidized, it pays nowhere near as much as it should for air pollution or road wear. Meanwhile rail companies have to pay to maintain their own roads, and even pay property taxes on it.

so what are the plans here collectors till milton?
Collectors will be between 407 and James Snow to allow access to/from 407 and Trafalgar Rd and east of Winston Churchill to 427

Will there be preparations put in place for the future construction of the new "Western GTA", 400 series highway starting at the 401/407 junction?

I really have no idea if there any provision for a connection to Western GTA Hwy under the current contract.

No. The 401 will actually squeeze under the 407 interchange because the bridges were not built long enough for a collector-express configuration. Any redesign of the interchange allowing connections to a new highway to the north might do something to mitigate this, including new overpasses for the missing collector lanes.

Right now they're just maxing out the design specs of the interchange- the 407 is also be widened through here. The only addition is a basket-weave flyover to the west of the junction.

Just saw that the new westbound express lanes are now open. Including an awkward exit to Mavis and no real signage indicating that there’s express lanes now. Not sure how it works further because we got off at Mavis. Must have happened overnight because they weren’t in that configuration when I was driving home last night (401 was closed completely at Mavis actually).

Sept 20
It looks like there will be a lane change from the collectors to the express lanes east of Mavis and need to take some shots from the bridges to confirm it.

Once you enter the east bound express lanes, look like you can't transfer to the collectors until Dixie.

Looks like the 401 was on detour Sat night for the placement of the centre beams for Creditview overpass as they are in place tonight, but not 100% bolted. The bottom of the bathtubs are about 4 feet above the top of the current bridge and really going to increase the clearance under the new overpass. Can't get good shots looking east with the bathtubs in place.

3 metal caissons on each side of the Credit River for both collectors new bridge support are in place with pier support frames to be place in the caisson to pour the supports.

The new off ramp from Mississauga Rd to the eastbound collectors lanes as well the collectors lanes have asphalt and stop short of the RR bridge being form.

A lot of work has taken place since my last trip on June 29 as a very fast pace.

Work is now on the west side of 25 to where it will start/end.
