Roads: Bathurst Street Bridge

Real odd to see the old handrail on the bridge section that hasn't been fix to the new one for the ramp area. The old handrail post needs a lot of work at the sidewalk area. Did someone forget to place an order to fix the old handrail or waiting to find someone that can restore them since they would be class as heritage in the first place like the bridge itself.

As normal, the bridge is already tag and a short life cycle of looking new. The bridge builder plate is a nice touch.

What'd be the point just doing that on the bridge?

Had a look at the bridge and wrong on the handrail. The new handrail is steel or cast iron trying to try to match what was there before and not finish. Missing sections in many locations and no work on the bridge railing at all.

By the looks of things the ramp to Fort York will no be replace that was once there.

Bridge looks good now its open and more so once all the work is finish. Too much snow to keep off the lens shooting as I will have to do it again soon.

I also noticed theres a wire connecting the lights on either side. Looks temporary and permanent at the same time...I hope they can neaten it up.

One of my friends asked Joe Cressy's office about the handrails. Here is the answer she got from his office, who got the info from the City project manager.

"The original scope of our City contract is to do rehabilitation work only on the City spans (south of the truss), as the truss span maintenance is the responsibility of Metrolinx. But at the early design stage we found out that Metrolinx is planning their next rehabilitation of the truss span for 2023. As a result we engaged Metrolinx to see if they would be able to advance all the deck top work on the truss span and combine it in our 2020 City contract with the goal to minimize disruptions to the public in later years. During the discussion, Metrolinx brought up that their plan is to install 2 metre tall protective barriers on the bridge, as part of the Metrolinx Electrification Project in 2023 and therefore has asked us to exclude any work on the railing in the City contract. Hence, the railing replacement is only limited to the railings south of the truss span."

So my understanding is that Metrolinx will be replacing these railings in 2023 as part of their rail electrification project.

Sounds reasonable, if a bit unfortunate.

All bridges going over Metrolinx electrify lines will see all current handrails being replace by 2 meter fence. This is standard on other systems and will have an impact for use who photograph from these bridges.

Spadina bridge is supposed to be one of the next bridges to see fencing and you better get photograph done before it happens regardless what you are shooting.

Was looking forward in getting shots from the Puente de Luz Bridge (Portland) when it open until we found the fencing there kill that idea and things to come. Even John St bridge in Weston is the same thing.
