Ridiculous comments and claims made by City Councillors

I just posted this in the NIMBYism thread, but it probably belongs here instead:

KWT has withdrew her request for a report on a downtown condo moratorium.

http://app.toronto.ca/tmmis/viewAgendaItemHistory.do?item=2016.TE20.63
I understand she withdrew it but a (less total) proposal for all of downtown is being worked on. (BTW, in my opinion this is not a ridiculous comment or claim - though it may be more than necessary.)

And here it is:

TE20.82 : Ward:20, 27, 28
Request for a Report on Planning Tools to Ensure Municipal Service Levels and Infrastructure Keep Pace with Downtown Development Forecast
The Community Council will be considering a motion to add this new business item to the Agenda.

Cllr De Baeremaeker says that the residents he hears from who are most adamant about not raising property taxes live in TCHC.
While this is ridiculous it may actually be true.

Councillor Campbell: "We just approved 18 bodies to watch for trains in tunnels at night because of an accident over 10 years ago. No wonder there is a TTC deficit."

He sits on the TTC board.

There is an automation option available, but that also means spending money on research. He doesn't want to spend money on research of course, as research is not tangible. Campbell would rather ignore inquest recommendations anyways as inquests are also a waste of money, for him.

Wouldn't be surprised. Poor people rarely have their own long-term best interests in mind; they're desperately just trying to live until tomorrow. There is also quite a bit of evidence that both faltering nutrition and high stress cause a severe reduction in IQ (it's one of the reasons it's hard to pull yourself out of homelessness without assistance).

Simply put, when you're really really thirsty a "contamination" sign on a water fountain isn't going to keep you away.

Councillor Mammoliti wants to ‘punch out’ Mayor Tory’s plan for road tolls

From link.

A month after giving the middle finger in response to a plan to impose a “roof tax” on homeowners, outspoken Toronto city councillor Giorgio Mammoliti has launched a “grassroots” campaign to oppose Mayor John Tory‘s endorsement of tolls on the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway.

“These new taxes and the underhanded way in which they are being implemented is totally unconscionable,” Mammoliti said in a statement released to the media on Thursday.

“Many of these new taxes punish people who work, own homes or drive cars. While residents don’t mind paying their fair share to fund core city services, they are fed up with having to pay for the never ending spending agenda that Mayor Tory has bought into.”

Tory’s new stance on highway tolls has been a total about-face for the Toronto mayor who had previously campaigned against the idea.

In addition to placing tolls on both highways, a city staff report to be presented to the executive committee next week is also proposing several other measures to grapple with the city’s infrastructure deficit estimated to be at least $33 billion.

Some of the ideas mentioned in the report include adding a hotel tax, imposing an alcohol tax at LCBO stores, parking sales tax and a municipal income tax.

Mammoliti said he is launching an online petition, as well as handing out posters, bumper stickers and fridge magnets, to encourage residents to speak out against the possible taxation measures.
