Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

From Star: https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/20...nst-jeffrey-northrup-is-released-on-bail.html

Man accused of killing Toronto police Const. Jeffrey Northrup is released on bail

Naturally Doug thought he knew more that the Judge in the case so without any real information and background he tweeted and deleted) -

From CBC News: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/northrup-police-toronto-bail-1.6185473

Premier's tweet deleted and reposted with altered wording
Shortly after the news of Zameer's bail was made public, Ontario Premier Doug Ford tweeted his shock at the accused's release, saying "this is beyond comprehension."

"It's completely unacceptable that the person responsible for this heinous crime is now out on bail. Our justice system needs to get its act together and start putting victims and their families ahead of criminals," the tweet said.

Ford's original tweet indicated Zameer was 'responsible for' Northrup's death. (Twitter)

Minutes later, Ford's tweet had been deleted and reposted with slightly different wording. The phrase "the person responsible for this heinous crime" was swapped for "the person charged for this heinous crime."

Even this, though certainly less sure of himself is really unnecessary! Nothing wrong with saying "I will be interested in knowing why the person accused has been released on bail" but that's too nuanced for Mr Ford.

Reading the above report .............

These are the bits I found interesting, and perhaps a less reactionary Premier might have seen fit to consider.....

The City of Toronto has lost, and Doug Ford has won, when it comes to setting Municipal election boundaries and rules, as per the Supreme Court of Canada.

Of note, the ruling was 5-4, which is comparatively rare from a Court that tends to value unanimity over potential divisiveness.

Disappointing, but what would the consequences have been had they ruled in Toronto's favour? A return to 47 wards in the next election?

Very hypothetical.

Would have depended on the nature of the ruling.

Certainly, if the SCOC had struck the existing provincial law, then yes, by default, 47 wards would have returned, unless either the City or the Province changed that.

There were separate issues at play at to the province's right to make certain changes in absolute terms; vs simply a timing question (mid-campaign), the City ultimately lost on both.

The timing question would not have affected the province simply re-passing its law now, outside the campaign period.

The question of fair/effective representation might have placed limits on the manner in which the province could legislate. But its moot, since the City lost on both.

Local government had to press this, and losing 5- 4 shows this is not settled, at least in the court of public opinion. Ethics should count.

Unfortunately, judgements in the Court of Public Opinion have no validity but the fact that the Supreme Court was split so evenly on this does give some hope that another similar case about municipal powers and provincial authority may come down on the other side. Time will tell!

Breaking news...............Caroline Mulroney not the only Provincial Minister who does Del Duca Impressions!

Let's hope so.

I figured this was going to be overturned. It just sets a terrible precident for fair representation Will Ford try to get away with anything else when it comes to meddling in city affairs?

So far he hasn't meddled too much in the Conservative voting areas. Will be getting the popcorn out out when he decides to do so.
