PM Justin Trudeau's Canada

What I meant more is when people see italy in lockdown that would raise the anxiety in other western nations.

yeah regardless of poltics in times of crisis people will look to the PM for leadership and that is gonna be hard if he is isolated in these critical days.

Especially when provinces start giving conflicting guidance and advice and restrictions.

Time for Freeland to take charge :)

Isolated physically. doesn't mean he can't be in front of a TV camera, much less the phone or teleconference. Nothing will show leadership more than working while you are under isolation. People who want to be political about it on the other hand...

Trudeau says government will warn against international travel and tighten border to stop spread of COVID-19
Prime minister's wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, has tested positive for coronavirus

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government will warn Canadians against international travel and is considering tightening the border to some international travellers.
"As you've seen, there are recommendations not to travel outside of Canada. We're in the midst of co-ordinating with the Americans, obviously, on our borders, on our actions. We'll continue to evaluate what we can do and how we can keep Canadians in security and we won't close the door on any idea."

No country has successfully stopped the virus through travel bans and border closure - it's like closing the barn door to stop air from flowing through.

“One really great thing about airplanes, from a public health perspective, is that every passenger is tracked, including their seat numbers, where they were sitting, who was sitting near them, such that followup actually becomes relatively easy from a public health perspective. Every other mode of transportation is more difficult to retrospectively track people and who an infected person might have come in contact with.”

Would *you* have advised against travelling to the US - a good chunk of it done by car - three weeks ago?

I suppose 'leadership' means different things to different people. I don't need the head of government running around filling sandbags, greeting sick people or whatever the crisis of the day is. In this case, leadership to me means a government that demonstrates a calm, considered and professional response to the issues of public health and safety. The role of the legislative part of government is to ensure that the right policies, coordination and funding are in place to let the actual professionals to do their jobs.

Wonder if the lesson will stick this time. It is not like the Spanish Flu of a hundred years ago had a particularly difficult time crossing borders in a short span of time.

Anybody that equates this current pandemic with the so-called Spanish Flu either need to stop using the Internet or start using it better. The pathology and mortality are, so far, completely different as are the comparative prevailing medical and social conditions.

Not necessarily- tightening borders (did not mention closing the borders) does have an effect in flattening the curve in preventing new sources for community spread as opposed to letting all travellers come in unscreened. Things like temperature-testing incoming travelers for illness (even though 11% may not show symptoms, it's still better than nothing), and enforcing mandatory quarantines from all countries facing exponential spread (it was nearly fortuitous that Canada caught the first few instances from Iran) would have helped tremendously rather than letting travelers self-report. The other important step would have been to get the citizenry alerted that it's a potentially serious issue (discourage leisure & Snowbird travel earlier) so that they won't laugh it off and then panic when/if it gets bad.

There are some other actions that could have been taken, especially in implementing rationing & price controls for masks and sanitizers (instead of letting hoarders and scalpers get their hands on them), and encouraging the use of masks (ensuring supply and no public shaming- they do help in tight spaces like public transit). Enforcing social distancing a few weeks ago would have helped as well, especially as schools(!) are still open in parts of Canada.

And yes, I had an inkling that Trump was downplaying the issue long ago, if you judge based on his precedent actions and the global situation at large- an international travel advisory and proactive testing at the border would have been sufficient. If anything, economic considerations go out the window anyways once panic sets in- we might not have gotten all the cases through, but to play by the analogy, it's far better than letting all the air through and then finding that the entire barn is freezing.

We should have gone the route of Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea IMO. Even in Hong Kong where the government's actions were insufficient, the spread of the disease has been blunted by the citizenry preparing (masks!) and socially distancing themselves.

Too late now!
