OLG Toronto/GTA casino proposal (where to put it?)

1. You are correct....Woodbine is not in Peel....it is Etobicoke. However, it is very accessible to people in Peel Region.

There are over 1 million people in York Region who do not have a gaming facility. A lot of those people in York Region are middle-upper class and own their homes. Were talking Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket, Stouville.
York Region will continue to grow well into the future......

There are many in York Region who might tell you that a facility on highway 27 has pretty good acess to them too.

As I've said, I don't care where (or even if) a casino is placed.....but couldn't all of your closing paragraph describe Peel?

Yes most of my closing paragraph can describe Peel. By no means am I trying to get into a debate about which region is better than the other.
(However, York Region does have a higher income per household than Peel, as well as a higher home ownership percentage rate.)

What I am trying to say though is that in my opinon, Downtown Markham will be getting the new casino.
Everyone in Markham has heard about the plans for Downtown Markham/Markham Centre. However I find that many people outside of Markham, and especially outside of York Region, have not heard of it at all.

Let me give you a little summary......

For general info about Downtown Markham, please read the following wikipediea link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown_Markham,_Ontario

The term "Downtown" Markham, is a term used by the developer to describe the area. However, to think of it another way, what Markham is trying to create is the main area for economic development in the Town. An area that consists of a high concentration of residential, retail, and office buildings. An area full of world-class restaurants, retail shops, and entertainment.

Generally speaking, the Town of Markham has always been divided into three main villages: Markham Village, Unionville, and Thornhill. Each of these villages has their own main streets and central locations: Main Street Markham, Main Street Unionville, and Thornhill has Yonge Street. However, Markham as a whole does not have its own main area for all the people throughout the entire town to share. It does not have a central area for economic development. Many of the municipalities across the GTA have a “downtown” area of their own. Back in the 70’s, North York decided that it would build a “downtown” area for itself full of residential, retail, and office buildings. 30 years later we have North York Centre, an economically thriving area. Other Municipalities, such as Mississauga, Vaughan, and Scarborough, have their "downtowns" (central areas of economic development) around huge malls: Square One, Vaughan Mills, and Scarborough Town Centre. The problem with those areas is that those malls have huge parking lots surrounding them, so you don’t get the same downtown feel.

Downtown Markham/Markham Centre is the Town of Markham's attempt to create it's own central area for economic development. It has been in the planning since the mid 90's. The main builder, financer, and owner of the land, The Remington Group, have a dream to make Downtown Markham a world-class area. They could have just taken the land and built a few large residential subdivision and made lots and lots of money. However, they decided that they were going to do something different, something that would be special. The plans that Remington Group has for the area are very ambitious and back in the 90's they were called crazy. However, many great visionaries throughout history have faced ridicule from doubters claiming that large projects could not be achieved. Remington Group is on a path to prove them wrong and by 2020 Downtown Markham will be the envy of the Province.

The casino is coming to Downtown Markham my friends.....remember that you heard it here first!

Just a reminder...if you have 17 minutes to spare, watch this Steve Paikin interview with the CEO of OLG.

Sun: Casino good deal for single moms: Mammoliti

Single mothers could hit the jackpot with a Toronto casino, Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti argued Sunday.

Appearing as a guest on Mayor Rob Ford’s Newstalk 1010 show, Mammoliti floated the idea that a casino in Toronto could create “10,000 jobs†for residents — specifically single moms.

"Imagine how many single mothers we can actually train, perhaps if they want, to become dealers," Mammoliti told Ford and his brother Councillor Doug Ford during an on-air discussion.

The pro-casino councillor added that a Toronto gambling complex would lead to constructions jobs and other spin-off jobs "for years to come."

"Casinos is at our fingertips right now guys ... I don’t want to give it to Mississauga, I don't want to give it to Markham — those are the two municipalities that we are going to be competing with," he added.

Councillor Doug Ford added a Hogtown casino would be bigger than the ones in Niagara Falls and Windsor.

"We're talking (about) bringing the big boys in, the Wynns, the MGMs, the Caesars Palace — we're talking about the major, major players coming in," Ford said.

Place the Casino at Yonge and Hwy 7, the proposed terminus to the Yonge Subway. Direct funds from the casino to expansion and operations with funds allocated to capacity improvements in the south. Toronto gets some of the benifits without the trouble of hosting the complex.

Being located between the 400 and 404, adjacent to the 407, on the Subway, the Go train and just off Yonge Street, this location could have excellent access.

Not sure who runs NF....but something tells me that Caesers may already be in Canada.....I often find hints in names.

Or you could build it at VCC at the terminus of a subway that is actually being built rather than proposed.

I actually think Markham would do a better job and promoting the casino and it would be more successful as a result. They could advertise it as a key element of their city. Ethnic Chinese tourists from around the world could be marketed too with the host of Asian malls and services in the area.

I've lived in Vaughan for the last 15 years and the only thing our politicians have successfully promoted is themselves.

Markham has big plans for it's quadrant of this intersection and this project could easily fit in with their plans.

By placing it in this location, you could possibly wring more funds from the province for the necessary upgrades to the Yonge Line or the DRL.

How is this working exactly ?

We know Mississauga and Markham have shown interest and Toronto isn't sure yet.

Do all the municipalities have up to a certain date to submit a request to the government of Ontario / OLG, and then essentially the OLG will evaluate all the bidders and decide ?

I ask as it seems Toronto is going to take time to decide if it wants in or not and what location, do they have up to a certain date ?

Player? Or players? Sorry, I am supportive of one casino, not a casino strip.

AoD

A casino strip might actually be interesting, if it were done more in the spirit of Fremont than of the Strip. Instead of having one mega-facility there could be three or four small ones, with several boutique hotel operators, perhaps a single large convention facility, and restaurants and entertainment scattered around.

I agree with you 100% my York Region neighbour.
By placing the casino in Downtown Markham, it will be more likely that the Province will fund upgrades to the transportation infrastructure in the area. Already there is major construction currently underway on HWY 7 between Yonge Street and Warden Avenue. VIVA is building a "Rapidway system along Hwy 7. What is a Rapidway? "Rapidways are dedicated lanes in the centre of the road that allow Viva vehicles to avoid congestion and maintain faster, more consistent travel times. Travel time is further enhanced by transit signal priority that helps Viva vehicles stay on schedule".

If anyone has driven on Hwy 7 recently you'd know what I'm talking about....there is construction everywhere.

Here is a link for a map showing the public transit upgrades in York Region. (Downtown Markham is in between the Unionville Go Station and Warden Avenue.)

Here is a link showing that the Province of Ontario has already committed $1.4 Billion over next five years for the expansion of the Viva rapid transit system.
