Novel Coronavirus COVID-19 (nCoV-2019)

That is why shutting down the borders is better. ^^^

You can cut off new chains of infections and focus on the ones in canada.

Some, including Conservative leadership hopeful Peter MacKay, applauded U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision earlier this week to impose a temporary ban on European travellers to America.
But health experts are skeptical about the efficacy of travel restrictions as a way to slow the spread of COVID-19 domestically.
“Travel restrictions are some of the least effective (responses). Travel restrictions are the measure that you think ought to work, so they have this very powerful brain stem thing … but the data tells you that they’re not that good,” said infectious disease specialist Allison McGreer of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.
“I think we need to be focusing on global social distancing measures within our population more than we focus on trying to keep (COVID-19) out. We now have community transmission in Canada…it has started, it’s going to progress, and we need to focus on that as the major issue, not on travel-related cases.”
Last week, a team of scientists at Northwestern University found that China’s travel restrictions in Wuhan — the epicentre of the global pandemic — did not stop the spread of the virus, but only slowed its transmission by three to five days.
Travel restrictions alone, the scientists found, were insufficient unless coupled with tactics like social distancing — basically limiting social interactions and staying home if sick. On Friday, Canada’s chief medical officer embraced social distancing as a way to slow the spread of COVID-19 in Canada.

PEI has one case. That’s the best opportunity for shutting a border. Close the Confederation Bridge to incoming traffic. Close the ferry ports. None shall pass. Wait it out.

Honestly, by this time everyone who travelled and arrived should be aware of the need for self-quarantine - the majority simply have to self-police their own behaviour. This is where social cohesion and social pressure is beneficial.

You're assuming that everyone is that self-aware and not thinking along the lines of "I don't have it (no symptoms), everything will be fine, I'm going to the bar with friends tonight."

This is one case where government enforcement is necessary.

No I am not assuming that at all - I know some people will violate it. The point however isn't that - but instead of wasting precious resources to find and enforce quarantine on the few people who will violate it during a time when you already have community spread, it's better to have as much social distancing as possible so that whoever breaking it can't spread it around as easily. In other words, your friends should be avoiding the bars right now with or without that someone who just arrived (and if your friends still hang out with you after you had travelled, they are idiots). Close all non-essential locus of congregation down - treat other people as potential carriers regardless of their travel history. That's how you can slow the spread.

Germany is set to close its borders with France, Austria and Switzerland from 8 am on Monday in order to try to hem in spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, German media reported on Sunday afternoon.

Exceptions are expected to be made for goods traffic and commuters.

The German government took the step following a conference call with the premiers of the affected states of Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg and Saarland, said newspaper Bild.

The government has not officially communicated the border closures.

The Trump administration has offered a German medical company “large sums of money” for exclusive access to a Covid-19 vaccine, German media have reported.

The German government is trying to fight off what it sees as an aggressive takeover bid by the US, the broadsheet Die Welt reports, citing German government circles.

The US president had offered the Tübingen-based biopharmaceutical company CureVac “large sums of money” to gain exclusive access to their work, wrote Die Welt.

According to an anonymous source quoted in the newspaper, Trump was doing everything to secure a vaccine against the coronavirus for the US, “but for the US only”.

The German government was reportedly offering its own financial incentives for the vaccine to stay in the country.

Crimes against humanity for this one.

Doug Ford says Ontario will ease sick-leave requirements in face of COVID-19 outbreak

From link.

The Ontario government says it’s introducing new protections for Ontario workers who are required to take unpaid leave during self-isolation or quarantine periods — including removing a requirement to obtain doctors’ notes.

In a statement issued Sunday, Premier Doug Ford said he had directed government to draft legislation responding the COVID-19 outbreak that will include measures to ensure employers provide “protected leave.”

“Our government is protecting workers so they can focus on their own health, and the health of their families and communities, without fear of losing their jobs,” the premier said.

It is unclear when the new provisions will become a reality. The provincial legislature is not currently sitting and proceedings may not resume until March 23 at the earliest. Ontario had reported 142 cases of the virus as of Sunday morning.

Due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19, MPPs unanimously voted this week to give government the ability to suspend the legislature as a health protection measure, if necessary.

In response to questions from the Star, the premier’s spokesperson Ivana Yelich said government would “pass the legislation as expeditiously as possible.”

Opposition leader Andrea Horwath said the New Democrats “will be co-operating to draft and pass a bill to help people in Ontario weather the storm.

“I’m pleased that the government is now drafting emergency legislation to help Ontarians cope with the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said.

The new measures will apply both to employees who are in self-isolation or quarantine, or those who are providing care to others.

Yelich did not say whether the legislation would include any provisions for paid leave.

Alberta’s provincial government announced new measures this week to provide workers with 14 job-protected sick days, and waive the requirement to provide doctors’ notes. In the United States, Congress passed an emergency coronavirus bill Friday that includes a provision for two weeks of paid sick leave for some workers impacted by COVID-19.

Additional details of our government’s ongoing efforts to support Ontario families during the difficult period ahead will be announced in the coming days,” the premier’s statement said.

“We look forward to working with the federal government on further measures to enhance financial support for businesses and workers.”

New measures should be forced mandatory quarantine with fines and jail punishments for people coming to canada
