Montreal Metro Laval Extension

Nice! and huge. Must be a big bus transfer station.

based upon other stations, I would guess that that function is done at the busy intersection with no direct transfer.

I never felt that the extra couple of minutes to reach the surface was ever a hindrance nor obstacle to using the Metro in Montreal. Les Montrealais have all reason to be proud of the only fully subsurface mass-transit subway system in North America.

Well, going down all those escalators at a deep station like Lucien L'Allier, then seeing your train pull out, and knowing you have to wait 10 minutes...

Or that the subway that should be under St. Laurent is not even on St-Denis, but two blocks further still east...

And the reason it's all underground is because rubber tires on tracks and snow don't mix well. They went with the rubber tire system because the French had it, and would be easier to build deep stations and even deeper tunnels with it. (They can't convert to conventional wheels because of the grades when building it for rubber tires.

The Montreal Métro has its drawbacks.

It was never in ended to be above surface system. Bombardier owns commercial subway technology- for them Montreal is the model not an experiment.

I pretty sure the reason that the Montreal Metro is all underground is because the trains are not weatherproof, not because of the rubber tires.

Yeah, I'm not sure that being all underground is a reason to be proud... personally I like popping up outside once in a while. The crappy frequencies, small trains, wobbly rides, lack of escalators and ultra-deep stations make it a pain to use compared to the TTC, IMHO.

So where's the trillium logo to symbolise the Ontario taxpayers whose taxes were equalised into QC and spent on transit and $7 daycare?

those are stunning stations.
I always preferred the Montreal Metro when I lived there but after I moved here via Vancouver and then went back to visit Montreal I couldn't belive the low frequencies and tiny cars. I still love the stations. Toronto stations have always felt so claustrophobic to me.

I prefer Toronto's larger trains, and yeh they do have the advantage of going above ground. But I think Montreal has done a superb job with their stations, I never found the larger and deeper stations to be a significant hindrance.

I prefer subways to be underground, entirely underground. I've always said that Montreal, in my opinion, has better downtown coverage. Having the flexibility to run your subways above ground creates the urge to expand your subway service into areas like the suburbs where a subway shouldn't service.

My only knock on the STM is that they don't do the bus/metro intergration as well as the TTC in the more suburban stations that can warrant it.

Waiting 12 minutes for the train in the evenings kinda sucks too.

I'd rather wait 12 minutes in a station like that than keep schlepping my way up and down the world's largest public washroom.

You wouldn't say that after having to wait 12 minutes in a vault for a few nights in a row.... you's be wishing for a 5-minute wait in a washroom.

What I like most, they run the lines to wherever the demand warrants it, not rigidly following the street grids or even afraid to serve minor side streets. Their downtown loop is really good too. I visited Montreal last summer and found I didn't even need surface transit to get around, everywhere major had a subway stop and excellent PATH system linking them.
