Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Playter estate in the Danforth-Broadview neighbourhood:

Then. N.E. corner of Yonge and Gerrard. July 7, 1938.

Now. June 2014. I wouldn't call this corner of Gerrard just a few feet E of Yonge iconic; but the way gas was sold back in the day - sidewalk at roadside - is what attracted me to the Then picture.

Goldie, that first - the oldest picture - is amazing.

Yes, certainly when compared to that neighbourhood today.

Upon review of those pix, I realized that I placed them out of order.
The second photo is the oldest, 1880s.
The upper-floor windows do not appear until later - that first photo is dated c.1900

Then. N.E. corner of Yonge and Gerrard. July 7, 1938.

'Confectionery - Lending Library - Soft Drinks' ... not a combination you see much anymore.

Tamblyn is long gone, of course, but you can still see the name on the wall around the corner on Davenport:

When did the last "sidewalk pump" in Toronto bite the dust, I wonder...

In that light, I remember that maybe even into the 80s, there was a "storefront" fuel retailer (and some name-brand as well) on Davenport near Symington--but I don't know whether sidewalk pumps were involved...

One of the most interesting things in the 1935 pic (and there are many) is how even in the 1930's, Queen's Park and the U of T campus were fully integrated conceptually and urbanistically, as shown in the wonderful 1859 map below. The ring road "improvements" would come later.

It did look for a while that U of T's masterplan called for the removal of the bridge. All the recent road repairs seem to call that concept into question:
